Breastfeeding provides pain release for babies and the smell and taste of breast milk also helps.

A recent systematic review in Breastfeeding Medicine May 2026 examined the available literature on the use of breastmilk on reducing pain among hospitalized infants.

~Direct breastfeeding provided the biggest reduction in pain and crying time for babies undergoing procedures.
~Breastmilk odor and taste outside of direct feeding also decreased pain but to a lesser degree than direct breastfeeding.

While more research is needed, these initial findings support the use of breastmilk and breastfeeding as a way to help infants experience less pain during needed procedures.

If biting occurs, you can set limits and teach your toddler not to bite.

Setting limits and naming boundaries is an important part of toddler nursing

We often receive questions about hiccups and if they are a sign of feeding difficulties! Nope- hiccups are common in the first weeks postpartum. Some babies will feed right through them and others will need to take a break. Follow your babies cues and they will pass- just like hiccups while they were still in the womb!

Happy World Breastfeeding Week!

Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works is the theme for World Breastfeeding Week 2026 and included in the core objectives of World Breastfeeding Week are:
~Informing others of the importance of tracking progress in breastfeeding
~Anchoring breastfeeding implementation through policies and guidelines within our communities and health care systems
The World Health Organization and American Academy of Pediatrics support breastfeeding through 2 years with exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months. How do practices monitor their efforts? And is individual monitoring the most sustainable solution? If you work at a medical practice or within a medical system submit a request to your electronic medical records to help practices track breastfeeding rates through the first 2 years.

A review article examined the role of International Board Certified Lactation Consultant support in outpatient settings after birth. One of the studies included in this review was Dr. Witt's article "Integrating routine lactation consultant support into a pediatric practice." This study, along with the others 6 studies analyzed in the review article supports the findings that early IBCLC support within the first 2 weeks postpartum improves breastfeeding duration and exclusivity.
As we approach World Breastfeeding Week, and work to "Strengthen What Works," encouraging primary care practices to integrate breastfeeding support into their outpatient visits is critical.
We are proud to collaborate with Senders Pediatrics and offer IBCLC care to all breastfeeding families at their initial newborn visits after hospital discharge!

Diaper rash is common. Often starting with the basics including changing diapers frequently and given your little some tummy time without a diaper helps. But other times it can be persistent and given the anti-inflammatory and healing benefits of breast milk, it is certainly understandable that we ask the question: Can breast milk help a diaper rash?
A study by Veysizadeh et al in Breastfeeding Medicine 2026 compared zinc oxide ointment to zinc oxide + breastmilk for treatment. They randomized 42 infants.
Another study by Guler et al in Breastfeeding Medicine December 2025 also asked the question. They randomized 60 exclusively breastfed infants diagnosed with diaper rash either received standard treatment with a witch hazel cream or to apply breastmilk directly to the diaper area.
Overall for both studies infants in the breastmilk group had a better response.
In parents who are breastfeeding, applying breastmilk directly to a diaper rash may be more economical and provide more rapid healing than other treatments. And for infants with a more persistent rash breastmilk combined with other topical therapies maybe helpful.

Families often ask- "What temperature do I need to warm up my babies' bottle too?" And yet we see many babies taking bottles at different temperatures.
A recent systematic review and meta-analysis of 5 studies and 373 infants. The study authors found no effect of breast milk temperature on heart rate, oxygen saturation, or body temperature at 5 or 30 minutes after feeding. Nor did they find a difference on length of feeding.
So listen to your baby. This study confirms there is room for flexibility! If your baby has an opinion and wants their milk warmed then go for it but you may meet a different family who's baby is okay with a cooler temperature😊
