Jennifer H. Carey, LMHC Psychotherapist, Writer and Podcast Host. Here to help you experience more joy, freedom and healthy relationships!

Mission:
I create safe and supportive opportunities for individuals, couples and groups to illuminating and transform the stories and limiting beliefs that are holding them back. As a result, they can live out their fullest expression and healthiest relationships. About:
Through the avenues of psychotherapy, coaching, retreats, workshops, my podcast, newsletter and book, I help people become unstu

ck and live out their dreams, and experience more joy, freedom and expression. My Story:
Over and over in my counseling sessions with individuals and couples, I realized that we carry with us false stories that keep us from feeling more connection and fulfillment in our lives and in our relationships. I started my podcast, Illuminating the Stories that Bind Us with the hope that recognition of these false stories would spread and people could begin to not only shine light on them but also break through them so these fictional narratives aren’t running our lives. My book, also entitled Illuminating the Stories that Bind Us, carries a similar mission and includes knowledge, tips and journal prompts to help readers explore their own limiting belief systems, follow their dreams and healthiest relationships. My content on all social media platforms fosters meaningful connections through mindfulness skills and creative expression. Showing up here will not only help you gain the skills to live out your fullest potential, but you will also find a sense of belongingness and community of people committed to personal and spiritual growth. Be sure to look out for my weekly podcast episodes, Facebook LIVE Sessions for accessible wisdom and enriching experiences.

✨ I'm honored to be speaking at Unity on the River on June 7 at 10 AM.

I'll be sharing 7 guideposts for answering and following the Divine call—exploring how the Divine reaches out to us, how we can listen more deeply, and what may be getting in the way.

I hope you'll join me for a morning of inspiration, reflection, and connection. 💜

📌 SAVE THIS — The Layers of Stories Technique
If you've been following along, you've seen me walk through this step by step over the past few months. Now it's all in one place on YouTube. 💛

The Layers of Stories Technique is a 6-step process I developed — and wrote about in my book — to help couples and individuals uncover the hidden stories driving conflict in their relationships.

Here's what we covered:
Step #1 — Take a time-out. Separate and get calm before anything else.
Step #2 — Write down every story, fact, and belief you're holding about the conflict.
Step #3 — Ask yourself: is this story coming from love or fear?
Step #4 — Name your Parts. Which Manager, Firefighter, or Exile is showing up?
Step #5 — What else was in the room? Sleep, stress, old wounds, generational patterns.
Step #6 — Set aside a safe, neutral time to share your stories — and truly listen.

This is the work that changes relationships. Not just the argument in front of you — the pattern underneath it.

Step 3 of the Layers of Stories Technique: Love or Fear?

Once you write your stories down, ask yourself:
Is this coming from love… or fear?

“I have to do everything on my own.”
“I’m not meant to have what I want.”
“My life is only about giving.”

These aren’t truths.
They’re fear-based stories.
And when you name them,
They start to lose their grip.

Step 2 of the Layers of Stories Technique: Write it out.
Before fixing the conflict,
Get the stories out of your head.
Divide a page into two:
Left: What am I telling myself?
Right: What might they be telling themselves about me?
Clarity first. Then communication.
Save this for when conflict arises 🤍

Step 1 of the Layers of Stories Technique: Take a time-out.

Not as punishment.
Not as avoidance.
But as protection for the relationship.

Because when your nervous system is overwhelmed,
you’re not choosing your words—you’re reacting from them.

You can’t access compassion when you’re dysregulated.
Calm first. Conversation second.

Save this for the next time things feel heated.
And share with someone who needs this reminder 🤍

Almost didn't renovate our kitchen. 🏡

Not due to budget or design issues, but because of the tales I told myself about my husband.

Using the Layers of Stories Technique, we uncovered a surprise: the stories weren't true. Sometimes, the conflict isn’t the situation, but the narrative we create.

Ever reacted before knowing the full truth? Save this for a reminder. 💡

Ever hear the phrase ‘You teach what you need to heal’? Today I’m spilling the tea about how stories I carried about my husband fueled arguments in our relationship. These stories weren’t facts — they were beliefs I didn’t even realize I was holding. Stay tuned as I share how illuminating those stories changed everything.

If you keep having the same argument…
it’s probably not about the dishes, the money, or the tone.

It’s about a story underneath the moment.
Signs a deeper story might be activated:

1️⃣ The same argument keeps repeating
2️⃣ You feel fight / flight / freeze
3️⃣ One of you withdraws or shuts down
4️⃣ The emotional reaction feels bigger than the situation

That’s your cue to pause and get curious about what’s really being activated beneath the surface.
Awareness is often the first step toward changing the pattern. ✨
💾 Save this for later — you may need it during your next disagreement.

Ever caught yourself assuming someone’s thoughts about you? 🤔 The story we tell ourselves can sometimes be misleading. One false belief can quietly erode a relationship. The truth might surprise you.
