A floating dock is just about the perfect watercraft for Becca's needs, and it took us years to figure it out.

It's easy to take it personally when your students aren't engaged in the lesson you worked to prepare.

You can't really call it charity if the thank-you is required. "They have their reward," as someone said.

Sister Whitmer reads from the scriptures every morning. She studies from both the Bible and The Book of Mormon. Then she chooses a thought from her reading (or somewhere else if neither of them work for her) to share.

Sister Whitmer can't speak. She has a communication device that helps her talk, but she can only select a few words at a time. For longer messages like this it's easier for her to give yes/no answers to a communication partner. We propose different ideas and then wordings until we can settle in on what she'd like to share. She can be very specific, so it takes time.

Sister Whitmer says she feels called to share the gospel online. She is a service missionary and most of her work is community service, but she also wants to share her personal witness of Christ with others.

If everything about your life were decided by someone else, would you be able to experience joy?

It seems like you could still be happy when the choices people make for you align with what you value. So maybe agency isn't required for joy, or maybe it's so innate that it can't be completely taken away.

Anyway life definitely takes on more meaning (and, I would argue, joy) when we can choose things for ourselves.

Becca has a disability called Rett Syndrome that requires her to rely a lot on other people. She chooses these scriptures for herself and authors her own thoughts using a communication partner and yes/no with her eyes. She finds joy in choosing for herself, even if many of the things she chooses requires her to rely on the people around her -- the choosing is fundamental to the meaning.
