How something looks and how it feels are very different perspectives. To practice bramacarya is to recognize that your thoughts and experiences could be different from those of others. While you may know something, you likely do not know all.

Apply what you know and also approach with curiosity. Assume that in every situation there is something new to be learned.

There are opposites, but there are also many aspects in between. There is no “this or that.” There is nuance and variability. Everything exists within a spectrum. Where you are and how you engage with that spectrum changes every moment.

If you perceive everything as opposites then you will always been in a mindset of opposition. This can result in a state of mind that is combative and disagreeable. It can create an attitude of “me vs them.” It can create feelings of fear, anger and resentment.

If you practice bramacarya and recognize that there are similarities, variations, transitions and interconnections, then you will be closer to yoga. You will experience feelings of friendliness, compassion and patience. You’ll become a more authentic version of your self.

Sama: sameness
We’ve been taught to compare, to see differences, to consider something as right and something else as wrong. We label things as good and bad. We perceive that there are things that are better or worse.

Brahamacarya is recognition that there is no binary. That nothing exists independent of anything else. All things are intermingled, interconnected and dependent.

All things are the same: reliant on all other things.

To practice chastity is to have integrity, self awareness and self control. Brahmcarya is the ability to restrain yourself from allowing your ego to direct you through desire, want and selfishness. It is the recognition that you are no better, have no more power and are no more deserving than anyone else.

To practice Brahmacarya is to see yourself as part of a spectrum rather than a special and unique being.

Brahmacarya is the practice of living with a “beginner’s mind.” This does not mean that you should remain ignorant. Instead, you should approach everything with the wisdom you have gained, the knowledge you have and the experience you retain while also perceiving it as unique.

Things can be similar without being the same. Circumstances, people and events can feel familiar while still being different. To practice brahmacarya is to apply the philosophies of ta**ra: identify pleasure even in the mundane.

Brahmacarya is a practice of restraint and observation. To access this niyama we must approach everything with a mindset of curiosity, discovery and exploration.

Be a beginner every time. Seek out opportunities to learn.

What does it mean to “cultivate spirituality?”
Bramacarya is a practice of attempting to restrain ego which means we are attempting to refrain from allowing want and desire. When we shift our attention from our individual wants and recognize the broader needs of all, we can cultivate spirituality.

Do you recall what it was like to be a child and have a want, then have a parent tell you no? Ego is the child within you telling you that you deserve certain things, that you are special, that you are unlike others.

To practice bramacarya is to quiet ego; to be willing to see yourself as sama (same), to be available to learn and to recognize that your wants are no more important than those of anyone else.

Brahmacarya is a niyama that we often bring up in conversation and discuss among practitioners. It means, “spiritual cultivation,” “a period of celibacy,” as well as “a stage of studentship.” The simple explanation we provide is bramacarya refers to moderation.

To practice moderation is to avoid extremes. Santosa is being present and valuing what is in the moment. Moderation is a practice of knowing what is Right and what is needed in the moment. It is the practice of choosing to perceive with a “beginner’s mind.” Bramacarya is knowing enough to listen, to do the right thing and to open up to learning something new.

For example; you might always engage in a vinyasa asana practice at home, but when you visit Tahoe and feel the effects of the altitude, you recognize your limitations and trust your guide to provide a practice that serves your needs in the moment.

How do you travel to practice with us?
We’ve been known to boat, bike, walk, paddle board and ski to sessions.

Jim arrives by kayak and, lately, conditions have been perfect for his trips on the lake.

Yoga asana can be applied to both prepare for and recover from travel. Pranayama practices can help you to direct your energy during your trip. Mindfulness practices can give you the tools you need to problem solve and remain calm when conditions shift.

We appreciate it when you choose a sustainable way to arrive at our classes. Whichever way you do, we’ll be prepared to guide you through practices that help you to feel well throughout your travels.

How you begin your day can effect everything else about it.

The guidance from yoga sadhak, texts and philosophy is to rise before the sun to establish your practices before engaging with others. As yoga practitioners and guides, we do extract that. We rise early to practice and establish intention. Your lifestyle might require a significant shift to allow you to do the same. Establishing sadhana requires intention and dedication.

Our morning practices are intended to provide you with the opportunity to practice before you head to work or play. By beginning your day with asana, intentional breathing and mindfulness, you can begin to experience samtosa. Remain consistent, persistent and dedicated to this practice to maintain the quality of contentment throughout your day.

We have tools and we know how to use them.

Yoga practices have always incorporated the use of tools. Modern classes that focus upon asana utilize mats, straps, blocks, blankets, bolsters, chairs, walls and more.

Mindfulness practices can begin with the use of mantra, yantra and trataka. To access meditation we must remove these tools.

To access samtosa, we first must value what we have; body, breath, energy, emotion, senses and thoughts. We have to detach from desire and the trappings of ego. We have to let go of our wants and the stuff that is not Self.

What can you release to allow yourself to feel ease as you are?

Saṃtoṣa (संतोष) (also spelled santosh):
(nm) satisfaction, gratification; contentment; (janaka/prada) satisfactory.

“kaḍuā hai para phala mīṭhā:” patience is bitter but its fruit sweet;

“parama dhana:” a contented mind is a contented feast, contentment is more than a kingdom.

There is a natural rhythm to everything. Samtosa is recognizing, honoring and living in alignment with these rhythms. When we rush or attempt to force that is when we feel discontent, dissatisfied and frustrated.

You can access contentment with patience. Allow yourself to feel the rhythms of the earth and live your life in alignment. Do so and you will access the state of samtosa.
