1. Wrist Flexion Exercise
Some seniors with arthritis find that their wrists are stiff or unable to bend as far as they should. This exercise can be helpful when practiced regularly to improve wrist range of motion.

How to do it:

Place your elbow on a table with your hand facing the ceiling.

Slowly stretch your open palm with your other hand.

Don't push so hard that it hurts, but try to bend as far as you can.

Hold for 5 seconds and release.

Now, push your hand forward, hold for 5 seconds and release.

Repeat with your other hand.

2. O-Shape Exercise

This exercise for seniors with arthritis helps improve finger and thumb flexibility.

How to do it:

Keep your fingers together.
Curl your thumb.
Gently try to touch your thumb to your index finger.
Repeat with the remaining fingers.

3. Seated Stretch

Stretching the hip and leg muscles helps strengthen the muscles in the legs and hips, helps improve the range of motion of the knee joint, and reduces pain and stiffness.

How to do it:

Sit on the floor with both legs stretched out in front of you.
If you cannot sit on the floor, you can do this exercise in a chair or on a bed.
Slowly bend forward and touch your feet with your hands. However, people with arthritis should not try to reach too far if they feel pain.
Slowly return to the starting sitting position.

4. Stair Steps
The gentle bending of the knees in this exercise can help relieve pain.

How to do it:

Find a safe staircase to practice on.
Hold onto the railing for balance if necessary.
Step one foot up to the bottom step of the stairs, then step the other foot up to the same step.

Move away from the stairs and repeat
5. Ankle rotation
This exercise helps improve range of motion and strengthen the ankle joint.

How to do it:

Stand up and lift one foot off the floor, balancing on the other foot (you can hold onto the edge of a chair for balance)
Stand on your toes and draw a circle in the air by rotating your ankle.
Draw 5 circles in one direction, then change direction and draw 5 more circles.
Repeat the exercise with the other leg.
6. Hand grip exercise
This exercise helps maintain finger flexibility.

How to do it:

Clench your hand into a fist, do it slowly if you find it difficult.
Hold your hand in a fist for 5 seconds or as long as you can.
Release your hand and repeat 10 times.

Causes of Joint Pain in the Elderly
Joint pain in the elderly can be caused by many different factors, including natural factors of aging and medical conditions. Some common causes of joint pain in the elderly include:

1. Age and aging
As you age, muscle mass decreases, increasing pressure on the joints, leading to the risk of arthritis and joint pain. Joints can become stiff and less flexible due to a decrease in the amount of lubricating fluid inside the joint, thinning of cartilage, and shortening of ligaments. Joint degeneration such as osteoarthritis is also common in the elderly, when the cartilage tissue at the ends of bones is broken down due to repetitive motion, leading to pain, stiffness, and swelling of the joints

2. Genetics
If someone in your family has joint pain, you are more likely to develop the disease. Genetics can make some people more susceptible to joint pain as they age, as DNA affects the structure, strength, and integrity of joints, as well as how the body responds to inflammation. In addition, certain lifestyle factors, such as bad habits inherited from family members, can also contribute to the condition.

3. Lack of exercise
People who are sedentary are more likely to experience stiffness in their joints, as blood does not circulate evenly to the joints. This affects circulation and increases the risk of joint pain.
