In a high-stakes pharmacy or work environment, there is constant pressure to act fast, respond immediately, and solve everything now. And sometimes that's exactly right. But the leaders who last, who build something real, have mastered the art of the pause. They know when to slow down before they speed up. They know when to wait before they speak. Patience isn't passivity. It's a strategic choice. Where in your leadership do you need more patience right now?

Some of the most powerful leaders in pharmacy never had the word "manager" in their title or job description. They led from the counter, from the bench, from the middle of a chaotic shift by how they showed up, how they treated people, and what they refused to accept. Leadership is a behavior, not a badge.

As an abolitionist on the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman led people to freedom in complete darkness, with no map, no title, and no guarantee of safety. And she never lost a single person. Tubman didn't lead from a stage or a boardroom. She led from the front, in the hardest conditions, by sheer example and unshakeable conviction. That's a different kind of leadership than what most of us were trained for and it may be the most important kind. When have you had to lead through uncertainty with no roadmap? What kept you going?

Strategy without ex*****on is a dream. Ex*****on without strategy is just activity. The leaders who create lasting change in their pharmacies, their teams, and their organizations are the ones who can hold both a clear picture of where they're going, and the daily discipline to close the gap. Vision without follow-through fades. But vision with consistent action? That becomes culture.

Think about this definition of leadership for a moment — your job as a leader isn't to control, oversee, or enforce. It's to liberate. To clear the path so your people can do what they were hired to do, in the most effective and human way possible. What's one thing you could remove, change, or fix that would liberate your team to do better work?

You can give your team all the training, tools, and structure in the world. But the single most underused leadership lever is also the simplest one: genuine encouragement at the right moment. Most people are walking around carrying more self-doubt than they show. A leader who sees what someone is capable of, and says so out loud, changes things. Don't wait for the annual review to tell someone they're doing something well. Tell them today.

This is the shift that separates good managers from transformational leaders. Anyone can build a team that follows. The rare leader builds a team that could lead without them, that's the legacy worth building. In pharmacy, where the next generation of leaders is watching your every move, this matters even more. They're not just learning the clinical work. They're learning what leadership looks like by watching you. Who are you actively developing into a future leader right now?

We're deep into the year. Before you sprint to the finish, pause for 10 minutes and ask yourself these three questions. These are the ones to come back to every time you feel like you are going through the motions.

This is one of the simplest and most powerful definitions of leadership. It's not about your title. It's not about your results. It's about what you cause to happen in the people around you. Are the people on your team dreaming bigger, learning more, and becoming more because of how you lead? That's the only scorecard that really matters.
