A spinal cord injury can have effects that extend beyond the initial injury.
People living with spinal cord injuries are at risk for secondary health conditions that can develop as a direct or indirect result of the injury. These may include pain, spasticity, bowel dysfunction, respiratory complications, urinary tract infections, pressure ulcers, osteoporosis, and autonomic dysreflexia, which is a potentially life-threatening condition that can cause a sudden, dangerous increase in blood pressure.
These conditions can affect daily activities, independence, and quality of life. Research has found that several secondary health conditions are associated with rehospitalizations and contribute to higher rates of morbidity and mortality for individuals with spinal cord injuries.
Early intervention, consistent monitoring, and ongoing medical care, including rehabilitation, are important for managing these risks. Proactive management can help improve health outcomes, participation in daily activities, and overall well-being. Individuals with spinal cord injuries should work closely with their healthcare providers to address both immediate and long-term healthcare needs.

Erica Kilburn is our August 2026 Employee of the Month!
Erica has been with NURH for almost 3 years now and is our Interim Nurse Manager.
She is the oldest for 4 siblings and both of her sisters have worked or are working at NURH, one of them is one of our diet aides in the kitchen now. Erica does not have any kiddos, but she has 2 dogs and 1 cat. Spending time with family especially during the holidays like Christmas is something she loves to do. Erica says she likes to try new things like odd snacks and sharing her favorite "hole in the wall" shops with anyone that shares the same interest in crystals and holistic healing.
Erica you are a "GEM" to us and we are so glad that you are part of our team!
Congratulations and thank you for all that you do for NURH and our patients.

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can occur after a bump, jolt, or blow to the head or body that disrupts normal brain function. While some symptoms may be immediately noticeable, like loss of consciousness, confusion, headache, or dizziness, other symptoms can be more subtle and may develop hours, days, or even weeks after the injury.
Brain injuries can affect many areas of function, including thinking, emotions, behavior, communication, and physical abilities. Some less noticeable signs of a brain injury may include difficulty concentrating, memory changes, fatigue, sleep disturbances, or increased sensitivity to light or noise. Other symptoms may include changes in mood or behavior, such as increased irritability, anxiety, depression, impulsivity, or difficulty managing emotions.
Because symptoms can vary widely depending on the severity and location of the injury, it’s important to seek medical guidance if changes occur after a head injury, even if symptoms seem mild. Early evaluation and appropriate treatment, including rehabilitation when needed, can help support recovery and improve function.

We have a very lovely employee that is really special and even some of our patients think so. In fact so much that they presented Felicia Mitchell our EVS Housekeeping Manager with a beautiful quilt to show just how much they liked and appreciated Felicia during their stay with us. Our housekeepers are not just housekeepers to us or to our patients, they are someone to talk to and someone that will listen to what they have to say and they make our patients and guest feel welcomed always.
Thank you Felicia...you should have 1,000 quilts by now!

💙 This is why we do what we do.

We recently received this handwritten review from a patient’s family, and their words meant so much to our entire team:

“NURH is an outstanding facility with an amazing team dedicated to positive outcomes… We have experienced many different rehabilitation facilities throughout our lives, and this one is the best we’ve experienced, hands-down.”

They went on to recognize the teamwork between our PT, OT, SLP, physicians, nurses, patient care techs, nutrition, pharmacy, and providers, all working together toward one goal: helping our patients achieve the best possible outcomes.

And perhaps our favorite part:

“The employees show up with a smile & truly love their jobs. NURH is the best rehab in Utah!”

Thank you for trusting Northern Utah Rehabilitation Hospital with your care. Reviews like this remind us that rehabilitation is about more than therapy. It’s about teamwork, compassion, encouragement, and helping people get back to the lives they love.

We are passionate patient caregivers. 💙

🎉 Celebrating 20 Years of Ms. Wheelchair Utah! 👑♿

Northern Utah Rehabilitation Hospital was honored to participate in the 20th Anniversary Ms. Wheelchair Utah Princess Pageant!

It was an incredible event celebrating confidence, inclusion, strength, and the amazing young women and girls who remind us that possibilities have no limits. 💙

We are grateful for the opportunity to support an organization that empowers individuals with disabilities and helps every participant recognize the difference they can make in their communities.

Congratulations to Ms. Wheelchair Utah on 20 wonderful years, and to all of this year’s princesses and participants! 👑✨
