The Aroostook House of Comfort is a six-bed hospice facility where Northern Light Home Care & Hospice provides hands-on care. Located in Presque Isle, the state-of-the-art facility is owned by the Aroostook Hospice Foundation. Together, we offer compassionate end-of-life care, comfort, dignity, and support to individuals and their caregivers.

“I am participating in Champion the Cure Challenge in memory of my Memere, who lost her battle to lung cancer almost 15 years ago, and in honor of all of our patients and their family members who have been through, or are currently going through, their own fight with cancer.

Most of us have been touched by this devastating illness in some way or another; whether personally or someone we know, like a friend, a co-worker, or a family member.

I walk, in hopes that someday, that may no longer be the case.”

Some people are just givers, uplifters, and doers. Addie is one of those people, jumping in wherever she is needed with a positive attitude, listening ear, and compassionate heart. She is always willing to offer support and lend a helping hand whenever needed, never acting like any job is beneath her or outside her job title.

Recently, Addie knew her coworker was having a very busy day, reached out to her, offered assistance, and took care of one of her patients.

Congratulations, Addie, for being recognized with our Heart of the Mission award. We appreciate your dedication to patient care and for your cohesive teamwork.

Putting her patients first is what hospice nurse Emma Upton, BSN-RN, is known for. Emma was recently recognized as our Heart of the Mission awardee for her consistent efforts to ensure our patients and their family get the support and care that they need, no matter what time of day it is.

Emma handled many late discharges from the hospital a few weeks in a row recently, which meant late nights. She also had a patient that needed a same day admission, which was a complicated one, requiring a lot of education and support of the family. Emma did not hesitate to step up, working after hours to make sure this patient and their family had the care and education they needed.

Congratulations, Emma, for exemplifying our mission by your dedication to patient care!

You’re not alone in your grief. As part of our grief support program, remembrance services, like the one we held recently in Ellsworth, gives family and friends of those we had the privilege to care for the opportunity to honor and remember their loved one.

The service included a welcome from Suzanne Moreshead, RN, MBA, CHFP, FACHE, president; reading of names of those being remembered; poetry and readings from our hospice team; candle lighting; special music from the Evensong Hospice Choir of Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County; and a reflection. Tim Soucy, MDiv, spiritual counselor and grief support coordinator, officiated the memorial ceremony and shared a pinecone analogy story of hope in grief and loss.
