👓 Why do I need reading glasses after 40?

Ever find yourself holding your phone or a restaurant menu farther away to read it? You’re not alone! 👀

It’s called presbyopia, a normal part of aging that occurs when the natural lens inside your eye becomes less flexible, making it harder to focus on things up close.

Common signs include:
🔹 Holding reading material farther away
🔹 Difficulty reading small print
🔹 Needing brighter light to read
🔹 Eye strain or headaches with close-up work

The good news? There are several options to help you see clearly up close, including reading glasses, multifocal lenses, and—in some cases—advanced lens options during cataract surgery.

If you’re noticing changes in your near vision, we’re here to help you find the right solution!

👁️ What Is the Retina?

The retina is a thin layer of light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye that plays a critical role in vision. Think of it as the camera sensor of the eye—it captures light and sends signals to the brain, allowing you to see the world around you.

A healthy retina is essential for:
✅ Sharp central vision for reading and recognizing faces
✅ Peripheral (side) vision
✅ Seeing in low-light conditions
✅ Processing the images your brain interprets every day

Conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears, and retinal detachments can affect the retina and threaten vision if left untreated.

If you notice new flashes of light, an increase in floaters, a curtain-like shadow, or sudden vision changes, don’t wait—schedule an eye exam promptly.

✨ Testimonial Tuesday ✨

One month after cataract surgery with Dr. Coggin, Craig is enjoying clear vision at both distance and near without glasses.

Craig chose a monovision approach, with one eye optimized for distance vision and the other for near vision. Today, he’s seeing 20/20 in the distance and 20/20 up close, allowing him to enjoy everyday activities without the need for glasses.

Every patient has unique visual goals, and cataract surgery can often be tailored to match your lifestyle and vision needs.

🎨 Why do colors seem brighter after cataract surgery?

Many patients are surprised to discover just how vibrant the world looks after cataract surgery. 🌈

As cataracts develop, the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy and often takes on a yellow or brown tint. This can make colors appear dull, faded, or less vibrant over time—so gradually that many people don’t notice the change.

During cataract surgery, the cloudy lens is replaced with a clear artificial lens (IOL), allowing light and color to reach the retina more naturally again. The result? Many patients describe whites as brighter, blues as more vivid, and overall vision as sharper and more colorful.

If colors don’t seem as bright as they once did, cataracts may be part of the reason.
