Corktown Health Expands Access to Care

June is Pride Month, a time to recognize the importance of inclusive, affirming care and the provider partners working every day to improve health outcomes for LGBTQ+ communities.

As a valued member of OSP's network, Corktown Health continues to expand access to high-quality, compassionate care across southeast Michigan. The organization recently opened its second community health clinic in Hazel Park, strengthening its ability to serve patients in welcoming, affirming environments.

Their new facility includes medical exam rooms, dental chairs, a pharmacy and community space, allowing Corktown Health to serve an additional 1,500 patients each year. The expansion will also create 30 new jobs and increase access to care in metro Detroit along a SMART bus route.

OSP is proud to work alongside providers like Corktown Health. Learn more about Corktown and their mission at: https://corktownhealth.org/

At OSP, we love seeing local practices find meaningful ways to connect with their community.

My Kid’s Doc Southfield is the embodiment of this. New this year, they are sending home all families of newborn patients with a gift bag that includes a new outfit.

We know how important those first few days can be for families, and gestures like these help create a supportive environment while celebrating the arrival of a new family member.

Thank you to the team at My Kid’s Doc Southfield for brightening the day of their newest patients and their families!

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a reminder that mental health is just as important as physical health.

This month, we encourage everyone to check in with themselves and with the people around them. A simple conversation, or asking for help, can make a big difference.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, or SAMHSA, has created a robust digital toolkit to learn about mental health and its effects, and the importance of spreading awareness: https://www.samhsa.gov/about/digital-toolkits/mental-health-awareness-month

May is Healthy Vision Month

This month is a reminder that early detection can prevent vision loss. Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of vision loss among working-age adults, yet up to 90% is preventable with timely screening.

It is recommended that those with retinopathy get an eye exam every year, and those without retinopathy every two years.

The National Eye Institute created a resource with information on how to protect your eyes, and resources to get started: https://www.nei.nih.gov/about/education-and-outreach/healthy-vision-resources/healthy-vision-month

Healthy Vision Month is the perfect time to learn how to protect your eyes — and help prevent vision loss in the future. Explore NEI's tips and tools to help you take control of your eye health so you can see well for a lifetime.

April is Medicaid Awareness Month, a time to recognize a vital part of our healthcare system and the communities we support.

Medicaid provides coverage for nearly 70 million Americans, including children, seniors, people with disabilities, and working families, while also strengthening hospitals, mental health services, and long-term care.

OSP is proud to partner with Medicaid health plans that share our commitment to physician-led, patient-centered, community-based care.

This Public Health Week (April 6–12, 2026), we’re celebrating the heart of OSP primary care, the providers who go above and beyond to improve the health of our communities.

Our primary care providers identify patients facing social and economic barriers, from food insecurity to transportation challenges, and act to ensure every family can access the care they need. To support them, select practices received Meijer Food Cards to distribute to patients in need, helping providers extend their care beyond the clinic walls.

At OSP, our role is to empower and innovate for our primary care providers, giving them the tools to close care gaps, address social influencers of health, and lift the well-being of the families they serve. Together, we’re showing that primary care is the front line of public health.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month

This month, let's prioritize proactive health, and raise awareness for diabetes prevention and treatments. Diabetes affects millions of Americans every year, and needs ongoing healthcare management to maintain.

Regular lab checks like A1c, eGFR, and uACR help catch problems early and keep diabetes complications away. If you’re overdue, it’s a great time to schedule those tests and follow up on results.

The MCT2D Resource Library contains helpful resources on diabetes management, dietary advice, and insurance guides for both patients and providers. Access the resource here: https://www.mct2d.org/resource-library

September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month!

This month is a powerful reminder of how important it is to help children build healthy habits early on. Learning about about nutrition and physical activity now can make a big difference later, helping prevent serious health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

Healthcare providers: Don’t miss an opportunity! Whether it’s a sick visit, a sports physical, or a well check-up, take a moment to:
- Check BMI percentile
- Talk about healthy eating
- Encourage active lifestyles

The CDC has created a resource for families and providers, outlining the importance of healthy habits and action steps that can be taken right now to help combat childhood obesity: https://www.cdc.gov/obesity/family-action/?CDC_AAref_Val=https://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpao/features/childhood-obesity/index.html
