Fibroids aren’t limited to one age group. They can develop in your 20s and sometimes continue causing symptoms later in life.

Because they grow slowly, changes in bleeding, pain, pressure, or energy can happen gradually. Paying attention to shifts in your normal cycle matters more than age alone.

Fibroid symptoms don’t always look the way people expect.

Heavy bleeding is one sign, but so are pressure, fatigue, and needing to use the bathroom more often than usual.

Over time, symptoms can become part of your routine before you realize how much they’re affecting you.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth following up with a provider and asking questions.

A national survey found that women with fibroids wait an average of 3.6 years before seeking treatment—and nearly 1 in 3 wait more than 5 years.

That’s an awful stat, but it doesn’t surprise me.

One of the biggest reasons I hear for waiting is uncertainty: uncertainty about what’s causing the symptoms, what treatment might involve, or whether it will mean surgery.

Thinking that a hysterectomy is your only option is understandably upsetting.

That’s why these conversations matter. Knowing that non-surgical treatments like UFE are available can make it easier to take the next step and schedule a consultation.

Fibroid symptoms don’t always announce themselves in obvious ways.

They’re often easy to explain away—especially when changes build gradually over time or start to feel like part of your normal routine.

If something here feels familiar, it may be worth starting a conversation.

"One of the hardest parts about fibroids is how often symptoms get normalized.

By the time many women come in to see me, they’ve spent years dealing with heavy bleeding, pain, bloating, or fatigue—without realizing those patterns may point to something treatable.

I appreciate bringing more honesty and visibility to what so many women experience and for reminding them there may be non-surgical options worth exploring.

UFE is often considered when fibroid symptoms—heavy bleeding, pain, pelvic pressure, or urinary changes—begin affecting daily life.
Candidacy depends on symptoms, imaging findings, health history, and personal priorities. A consultation can help determine whether a minimally invasive option like UFE fits your goals.

A lot of patients tell me they only realize something isn’t quite right when they stop and think about how much they’ve been adjusting around their fibroid symptoms.
It can be easy to normalize changes in your cycle or energy over time—especially when those patterns develop gradually.

But when symptoms start shaping your routines or influencing the things you feel comfortable doing, it may be time to evaluate all your treatment options.

July is Fibroid Awareness Month, and Community Coordinator Jakaya and I are wearing white to help raise awareness and show support for the millions of women affected by uterine fibroids.

Too many women spend years suffering through symptoms without realizing what they’re experiencing may be connected to fibroids—or that they may have better options.

This month, we’ll be sharing information, answering questions, and continuing the conversation around what freedom from fibroids can look like.

I hear versions of this pretty often.

Many women come in after months or years of trying to manage fibroid symptoms without realizing there may be an approach to treatment that doesn’t involve surgery, like UFE.

Sometimes the most helpful part of a consultation is simply having the chance to ask questions, understand what options exist, and talk through what feels realistic for your life.

Questions about UFE (uterine fibroid embolization) often include:
“How long is recovery?”
“Will I have to stay in the hospital?”
“What does the procedure actually involve?”
When women first learn about uterine fibroid embolization, they’re often surprised by what treatment can look like.
The goal of posts like this isn’t to tell anyone which fibroid treatment they should choose. It’s to make sure patients know what questions to ask and what options may be worth discussing.
