Sometimes, kids can have big reactions. Maybe they wake up dysregulated, overwhelmed, or on edge. Before long, siblings are reacting, parents are snapping, and the whole house feels tense.
This isn't because anyone is doing something wrong. It's because nervous systems are contagious.
Psychologists sometimes call this emotional contagion: our brains are wired to pick up on the emotional states of the people around us. We notice stress, mirror stress, and respond to stress, often without realizing it.
That's why family challenges can feel so big, so fast.
The good news? Calm spreads too.
When one person slows down, lowers their voice, regulates their own emotions, and responds instead of reacts, it can interrupt the entire chain reaction.
You don't always have to control the behavior to change the system.
Sometimes the most powerful intervention is helping one nervous system feel safe enough to settle.
❤️ Which spreads faster in your house: stress or calm?
