Lately I’ve been feeling increasingly overwhelmed, angry, scared, and powerless about what’s happening politically in the U.S. Rising authoritarianism, attacks on LGBTQ and immigrant communities, and the general sense that democratic norms are breaking down have taken a real emotional toll on me and many people I know.

As a therapist, I’ve also been working with more and more people who are struggling with the same feelings: overwhelm, isolation, doomscrolling, helplessness, and burnout.

One thing that has genuinely helped me has been getting involved with a small local political organizing group. Not because it magically fixes everything, but because it helps replace isolation with connection and helplessness with meaningful action. It also reminds me that political engagement doesn’t have to just feel exhausting and grim all the time.

Get • How to Move Through Grief (of all kinds)
Gentle reminders for the journey.

1. Name the loss
Grief isn’t just about death. It’s jobs, health, friendships, identity, dreams. It’s “what could have been.” Naming it makes it real.

2. Give yourself permission
There’s no “right” grief. No hierarchy. No comparison. Your loss deserves space.

3. Release the timeline
Healing isn’t linear. Grief doesn’t follow clocks or deadlines.

4. Find witnesses
Let safe people hold some of what feels too heavy to carry alone.

5. Pendulate between pain + rest
It’s healthy to move in and out of grief. Breaks are part of healing.

6. Let the body help
Breath, movement, grounding, touch (the body carries what words can’t)

7. Ritualize
Letters, candles, art, or visits create containers for expression.

8. Layer meaning, not pressure
Over time, some find growth or new perspective. Let it come gently, not forced.

Grief asks for compassion, not deadlines.

Get • .therapist Save this for when your mind won’t switch off.

Rumination isn’t overthinking.
It’s your nervous system trying to solve something that doesn’t feel resolved.

But the more you loop 🔂 the further you move from relief 🤯

You don’t break the cycle by thinking harder. You break it by shifting states:
– name what you feel
– pause before reacting
– come back to your body ➡️ check the second picture

That’s how the loop loosens.

it’s okay, healthy even, to let your friendships be friendships… and have a space that’s just for you, too

Welcome to the team, JJ Wright, LLMSW
Pronouns: She/Her. Bio below, visit our website to book an appointment.

Hi! I’m JJ, a Limited License Master’s Social Worker (LLMSW) who is deeply interested in how people make meaning of their experiences, especially the hard, messy, in-between parts that don’t always have clear answers. I believe healing is nonlinear, and growth often comes from slowing down, processing, and reconnecting with yourself in a more honest way.

As a q***r therapist, I’m passionate about working with LGBTQIA+ youth and young adults navigating identity, relationships, and the pressure of figuring things out in a world that doesn’t always feel affirming. I’ve also supported individuals and couples dealing with anxiety, depression, and trauma, and I’m often drawn to people who feel stuck, disconnected, or uncertain about what comes next in life.

I also aim to intentionally create a practice that is sex-positive, anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and affirming of identity exploration, seeing these values as central to meaningful healing. Outside of therapy, I value creativity, music, and spaces where people can show up authentically. On weekends, you might find me climbing, making pottery, or dancing to Detroit techno.

Our Work Together:
Starting therapy can feel vulnerable. My goal is to create a space where you don’t have to filter or perform, where you can be honest about what’s happening even when it’s heavy, confusing, or hard to put into words.

My style is collaborative and engaged. I’ll meet you where you are while offering gentle challenge and honest reflection when helpful. Together, we’ll explore patterns, build self-awareness, and develop practices of self-compassion that feel realistic and sustainable for you.

Get • Not knowing what to talk about is still information.

These questions help tune in to patterns, emotions, and body signals that are often overlooked.

Therapy doesn’t require you to have all the answers, just a willingness to explore what’s been quietly asking for attention.
