It’s wild how fast it happens. You walk into the rental home, drop your bags, and within an hour you’re back to being the family’s air traffic controller, reading everyone’s mood, smoothing the edges, making sure the trip “goes well” like it’s your personal job.

Part of that is just love, you want everyone to have a good time. But part of it is that going along is the path of least resistance, and you’re really, really good at it.

But guess what: you’re ALLOWED to be a guest on your own vacation. ⛱️

You can want the trip to be good AND still say you’d rather not do the four-hour drive to the outlet mall.

You can love your people and not be their manager.

The peace you keep by disappearing yourself isn’t actually peace, it’s just you doing all the work while everyone else relaxes.

👉🏻 So this trip, try one small thing: say what you actually want for one meal, one afternoon, one decision. Not a confrontation, just a preference said out loud. It might feel strange, maybe even rude. Hot take: IT ISN’T.

You’re not there to run the trip. You’re there to be on it. ⛅️

This week one of our clinicians joined therapists and mental health providers from across Michigan outside the Blue Cross Blue Shield building in Lansing, alongside MMHCA and NASW-MI, to oppose a BCBSM policy change that puts mental health access at risk for hundreds of thousands of people across the state.

Starting March 1, 2027, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan plans to stop covering therapy provided by limited licensed clinicians in private and group practices. These are master’s-level, trained, supervised therapists doing the required work toward full licensure. If your therapist is limited licensed and you use Blue Cross, this could potentially mean losing coverage for your care.

We are telling you because you deserve to know, and because your voice can make a difference.

To learn more, click on the link in our bio. Current clients, if you have questions about how this change may affect you, please reach out to us. We are paying close attention to this and will continue to keep you informed about the changes as they approach.

What you can do to help:

Sign the petition (link in bio).

Contact Blue Cross as a member and tell them you do not want to lose your therapist.
Contact your employer and inform them about your concerns about the restricted mental health care access coming to BCBS members.

Contact your state reps at senate.michigan.gov and house.mi.gov.

We are fighting and advocating for our clients, our community, and for our field.

MENTAL HEALTH CARE IS HEALTH CARE.

Self-sufficiency gets praised like it’s a personality trait…but it’s actually a survival strategy for lots of people.

If needing things as a kid was met with irritation, distraction, or a parent who couldn’t handle one more demand, you learned fast that the safest move was to need less: become “low-maintenance” & handle it yourself. ⬇️

That strategy doesn’t just turn off when you grow up…instead, it quietly runs your adult relationships too, so you end up surrounded by people who have no idea you’re struggling. (You’ve gotten too good at making sure no one can tell!)

Letting someone help you is a skill you can build. It takes practice, and a little proof that needing something won’t cost you. Therapy can help. Reach out today to schedule an appointment with one of our clinicians!

HAPPY PRIDE. 🪩✨🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️💃🕺

The kind of happy that feels loud on purpose.

Music too big, laughter spilling into the street, glitter in places you’re still finding days later.

All those years of learning how to disappear a little just to stay safe… and now you’re here, in rooms where you don’t have to shrink at all.

Where your friends feel like family you got to choose.

Where nobody asks you to be less so they can feel more comfortable.

Just you—out in the open, alive, seen, and somehow even more you than you thought was possible.

Dance like you mean it. You finally get to.

[TCM is LGBTQ+ affirming. If you still don’t feel safe in your own skin or your own home, and are looking for support, contact us today to schedule an appointment.]

There’s a specific kind of exhaustion that comes from saying “yes” to things you didn’t want to do, then quietly resenting the person who asked. 😴😫

But often saying “yes” isn’t actually a real decision.

It fires off automatically, before you’ve even checked in with yourself, because you might think that saying “no” means disappointing someone, and disappointing someone is more than you can emotionally deal with…it almost feels dangerous. ⚠️

So the “yes” protects you…for a while.

The resentment that follows a “yes” that you’d actually prefer to be a “no” is the part of you that did want to decline speaking up after the fact.

Stay curious. What might it take for you to create a half-second pause between a request and your answer? How can you invite your own needs to have a part of the conversation? 🌷

If you apologize for existing, for needing, for taking up space, you probably learned it somewhere it kept you safe. 🧯

A lot of chronic over-apologizing traces back to times in childhood when you were responsible for managing someone else’s moods…maybe conflict felt dangerous, or being a problem had real consequences.

Saying “sorry” first became a way to stay ahead of the threat.

The good news is that a reflex this old can still be unlearned.

It starts with catching the automatic sorry, asking yourself whether you actually did anything wrong, and noticing the real question hiding underneath it.
