Understanding Stimming: What Parents Should Know

Many children with autism engage in stimming behaviors, such as hand flapping, rocking, humming, or repeating words. These behaviors often serve a purpose, helping children regulate emotions, process sensory input, or express excitement.

Rather than focusing solely on stopping a behavior, it's important to understand why it's happening and whether it is helping the child meet a need safely.

Every child communicates differently, and understanding those differences is an important step in supporting their growth.
