Water play can be a fun way for toddlers to cool off and explore during warmer months, but even small amounts of water can pose a safety risk. Toddlers should always have close, hands-on adult supervision during any water activity, including splash pads, kiddie pools, water tables, and buckets.

Water tables, small pools, and buckets should be emptied immediately after use to help prevent accidental drowning risks.

At splash pads and public play areas, watch carefully for slippery surfaces, standing water, and crowded environments where children can quickly wander.

Floaties and puddle jumpers should never replace direct adult supervision. While some flotation devices may add a layer of protection, the safest approach is always active, attentive supervision within arm’s reach.

Have questions about water safety for your toddler? Contact one of our phone nurses today for guidance before summer activities begin.

Eating out with a toddler can sometimes feel unpredictable, but a few simple activities can help keep little ones engaged while waiting for food or sitting at the table.

Easy low-mess ideas include stickers, small board books, reusable coloring mats, magnetic drawing boards, matching games, or small sensory toys that are easy to clean. Snack cups with familiar snacks can also help bridge the wait time. Toddlers also enjoy simple conversation games like naming colors, counting objects, or spotting things around the restaurant.

Rotating a few small activities instead of bringing everything out at once can help keep toddlers interested longer.

What is your go-to restaurant activity for your toddler? Share your favorite ideas below.

Pediatric providers look at much more than just one height or weight measurement at a single visit.

Growth is tracked over time to better understand how a child is developing and whether patterns are staying consistent.

At well visits, providers monitor height, weight, head growth in infants, and BMI when appropriate.

They also consider nutrition, activity, development, sleep, medical history, and family growth patterns when evaluating overall health.

Sometimes children naturally grow at different rates, while other times changes in growth patterns may signal the need for closer follow-up, additional questions, or further evaluation.

Regular well visits help your medical home identify trends early and support healthy growth throughout childhood and adolescence. If your child is due for a wellness visit, contact Arbor Pediatrics to schedule an appointment.

Let’s play a quick game of Two Truths and a Lie about pool safety:

1) Floaties are a safe substitute for life jackets.

2) Drowning is often silent and can happen quickly.

3) A fence with a self-latching gate helps prevent unsupervised pool access.

Can you spot the false statement?

The lie is #1. Floaties are not a safe substitute for a properly fitted, Coast Guard–approved life jacket.
Drowning is often silent, which is why constant, close adult supervision is essential. Barriers like pool fences with self-latching gates help reduce risk, and swim lessons and water safety skills add another important layer of protection.

Water safety depends on multiple layers working together to keep children safe around pools and open water.

If you have questions about swim readiness, life jacket fit, or water safety for your child’s age, give our office a call. We’re happy to help your family prepare for a safer summer around the water.

Does your child have a rash? It could be impetigo.

Impetigo is a common skin infection in children caused by bacteria. It often appears as red sores or blisters that break open and develop a yellow or “honey-colored” crust. The rash is commonly found around the nose and mouth but can appear anywhere on the body.

Impetigo tends to be more common during the summer months because heat, humidity, bug bites, cuts, and frequent skin contact can make it easier for bacteria to spread. It is contagious and can spread through direct contact or shared towels, clothing, or sports equipment.

Treatment typically includes antibiotic ointment or oral antibiotics depending on how widespread the rash is. Keeping the area clean and encouraging good handwashing can also help prevent spread to others.

Impetigo is very common in children, and early treatment can help shorten symptoms and reduce spreading. If you think your child’s rash needs to be examined, call Arbor Pediatrics to schedule an appointment.

Summer schedules can easily shift with later nights and more flexible routines, but keeping sleep on track can help children feel their best. A consistent wake time each day is one of the most important ways to support a healthy sleep schedule, even during breaks.

Creating a screen-free wind-down routine before bed can help signal to the body that it is time to sleep.

Exposure to natural light in the morning and limiting bright light at night can also help regulate sleep patterns.

As the school year approaches, making gradual adjustments to bedtime and wake time over a few weeks can make the transition smoother.

If your child is struggling with sleep or routines feel off track, contact Arbor Pediatrics to discuss strategies that work for your family.

Choosing a daycare before your baby arrives can help reduce stress and give you time to find the right fit for your family.

Touring early allows you to explore options, ask questions, and get a feel for the environment before spots fill up.

Ask about infant sleep practices, feeding routines, staff-to-infant ratios, and how caregivers communicate with parents throughout the day. It is also important to check licensing, safety policies, and how the center handles illness and emergencies.

Pay attention to how the space feels and how staff interact with children. Trust your instincts when it comes to choosing a place where your baby will be cared for each day.

Still not sure what questions to ask a potential daycare? Our providers are here to help guide you and give you some topics you may want to discuss.

Is your family using a new pharmacy?

Keeping your preferred pharmacy up to date helps ensure prescriptions and refills are sent to the correct location without delay. Changes in pharmacy location, insurance requirements, or convenience can all affect where medications should be sent.

You can update your preferred pharmacy through the patient portal or by calling our office. Providing the correct pharmacy information ahead of time helps reduce delays and ensures your child’s medications are available when needed.

If your pharmacy has recently changed, let the nurse or provider know at your next appointment.

Torticollis is a condition where a tight neck muscle causes a child’s head to tilt to one side while the chin points to the opposite side. It can be present in infancy or noticed later in childhood.

Children with torticollis may prefer looking in one direction or have difficulty turning their head fully. Early stretching exercises and physical therapy are often very effective in improving range of motion and preventing long-term issues.

If you notice your child consistently tilting their head, favoring one side, or having limited neck movement, it is important to have them evaluated.

If you have concerns about head positioning or neck movement, contact Arbor Pediatrics to discuss next steps.

Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. We are grateful to the military families who carry this legacy and sacrifice.

As many families gather and begin summer activities, it is also a good time to keep safety in mind. Use sun protection, stay hydrated, and practice water safety by supervising children closely around pools, lakes, and the beach.

Arbor Pediatrics hope your family has a safe and meaningful Memorial Day weekend.
