Yes! Eat chocolate! More specifically, eat fresh cacao! Cacao (kuh-KOW ) powder (cocao) is a nutritional powerhouse, with research showing it offers multiple health benefits due to its high levels of antioxidants (flavonoids), magnesium, and iron. Research suggests these compounds help reduce cardiovascular mortality, lower blood pressure, improve cognitive function, and fight age-related inflammation. While these benefits make cacao powder worth including in our daily diets, it is important to choose organic, cold-pressed, third-party-tested products that are low in lead and cadmium, as some cacao can be high in heavy metals. To enjoy the benefits without adding calories, mix it into smoothies, coffee, hot chocolate, oatmeal, or even desserts, sweetening with honey, maple syrup, or dates rather than sugar. Although research has not determined a recommended daily allowance, most studies focus on 1-2 tablespoons per day for health benefits and a tasty treat! My new morning coffee ritual :-)
