If you asked for deeper pressure, you might wonder:

Why isn't my therapist starting deep right away?

Because deeper work doesn't necessarily mean pressing as hard as possible from the first minute.

A massage may begin with broader, lighter movements before gradually becoming slower or more focused.

It also gives you a chance to notice how the pressure actually feels that day.

Because the pressure you enjoyed during your last appointment may not necessarily be what feels best today.

And deeper isn't a finish line we're trying to reach.

The goal is to find the pressure, pace and technique that work for you.

If you want more—or less—say something.

Your feedback is part of the massage.

When a client mentions a headache along with tension around the head, neck or shoulders, we don't automatically spend the entire session massaging one spot.

Depending on what they're experiencing, their comfort, and what's appropriate for the session, massage may include:

1️⃣ Neck & shoulder work
Working with areas where the client reports feeling tension.

2️⃣ Upper-back work
Using broader and more focused techniques around an area that often feels connected to neck and shoulder tension.

3️⃣ Scalp massage
Gentle scalp work can add a soothing, relaxing element to the session.

4️⃣ Gentle head or facial work
When appropriate and comfortable, gentle techniques around the head and face may also be incorporated.

The important thing to remember is that there isn't one massage technique for every headache.

Tell your therapist what you're experiencing so your session can be adjusted appropriately.

And because headaches can have many causes, new, severe, persistent or unusual headaches should be discussed with an appropriate healthcare professional.

Have you ever noticed that one part of your massage feels slow and flowing...

and then your therapist spends more time working in one smaller area?

That's intentional.

Long, flowing strokes are commonly used in Swedish-style massage and can create a smooth rhythm while working across a broader area.

Focused work slows things down. Your therapist may spend more time in a particular area and adjust the technique or pressure based on what you're feeling.

And here's the important part:

Your massage doesn't necessarily have to be one or the other.

A customized session can move between broader, flowing techniques and more focused work depending on what you want from your appointment.

That's what customization actually looks like on the massage table.

Sometimes your workday ends at 5.

Your body doesn't always get the memo.

You close the laptop, leave the office or finish your last task—but you're still carrying the pace of the day with you.

Then you walk into your massage appointment.

Phone away.

Shoes off.

Lights lower.

You settle onto the table and, for the next hour, there's nowhere else you need to be.

That's one reason some clients enjoy scheduling massage after work.

It's not simply another stop on the way home.

It can become the line between work time and your time.

🌿 60, 75 and 90-minute massage sessions available.

Both can bring warmth into your massage—but they create very different experiences.

🔥 Hot Stones
Smooth, heated stones are incorporated into the massage to provide comforting, steady warmth. If you enjoy a soothing, cozy addition to your session, hot stones can add another layer to the relaxation experience.

🎋 Bamboo Fusion
Bamboo Fusion uses warmed bamboo tools that the therapist rolls and glides over the body. The shape and firmness of the bamboo allow the therapist to use the tools as an extension of their hands, creating a more active, focused massage experience.

So while both use warmth, the biggest difference is how that warmth is delivered and how the massage feels.

Hot Stones → smooth, comforting warmth + relaxation
Bamboo Fusion → warmed tools + rolling/gliding, more focused bodywork

Neither is necessarily “better”—they simply offer two different ways to customize your massage.

At Essential Massage Therapy, both Hot Stones and Bamboo Fusion are available as $25 enhancements.

Which experience sounds more like you?

Your body doesn’t feel the same every day—and your massage doesn’t have to be the same every time. 🤍

Some days, you may simply need time to slow down and relax. Other days, tight shoulders, an achy back, or areas of built-up tension may need a little more attention.

At Essential Massage Therapy, each session is personalized around how you’re feeling and what your body needs that day.

Whether you’re looking for relaxation or more focused therapeutic work, communication helps create a massage experience that feels right for you.

Listen to your body. Give it the care it’s asking for.

Your massage may last an hour, but that doesn’t mean your self-care has to stop the moment you leave.

When you can, give yourself a little breathing room afterward instead of immediately jumping back into a packed schedule.

Pay attention to how your body feels, enjoy the slower pace, and let that time you set aside for yourself carry into the rest of your day.

Sometimes one of the nicest parts of a massage is remembering that you don’t have to rush right back into everything. 🤍

Sunshine, warm weather, swimming, and plenty of time outdoors are some of the best parts of summer—but by the end of the season, your skin may be feeling a little dry or rough.

This transitional time of year can be a great opportunity to refresh your self-care routine.

Gentle exfoliation helps remove dry surface skin and can leave your skin feeling smoother and refreshed.

At Essential Massage Therapy, Dry Brushing can be added to your massage as an enhancement for a little extra seasonal care.

Have you ever caught yourself with your shoulders practically touching your ears?

Neck and shoulder tension can build gradually throughout the day—sometimes without us even noticing it.

When we spend long periods working at a desk, driving, or looking down at our phones, the muscles around the neck and shoulders may stay in the same position for extended periods. Stress can add to that, too. When we’re feeling rushed or under pressure, we may instinctively tense our shoulders, tighten our jaw, or brace our upper body.

Over time, those small habits can leave the area feeling tight, tired, or uncomfortable.

Try checking in with your body throughout the day. Are your shoulders raised? Is your jaw clenched? Take a moment to lower your shoulders, change positions, and take a few slow breaths.

And when those hardworking muscles need a little more attention, a customized massage can focus on areas where you’ve been carrying tension. 🤍

Sometimes your shoulders are telling you it’s time to slow down.

As summer winds down, it’s a good time to check in with more than just your schedule. Take a moment to check in with your body, too. ☀️

One of the things we value at Essential Massage Therapy is body awareness—taking the time to notice how your body feels and recognizing when something may need attention.

After a season of increased sun exposure, that awareness can include your skin. If you notice a new or changing spot, mole, or anything that concerns you, check in with your dermatologist for a professional evaluation.

Self-care isn’t just about taking time to relax. It’s also about paying attention to yourself. 🤍
