I have a theory that en caul birth is way more common than we think it is when birth is undisturbed.

En caul means that the baby was born with the membranes or bag of waters intact.

Also clarification on en caul births 👉

For 99.9% of en caul birth the entire baby cannot truly be born en caul because the bag has to rupture at some point as the placenta is still attached to the uterus and the membranes are part of the placenta. When we say en caul, usually we mean that the head has emerged en caul, the bag of waters almost always naturally ruptures as the shoulders emerge just like you see here with this baby.

St Perpetua and St Felicity

If you are a woman of faith and you don’t know about these women. You need to. 🕊️

They were third century Christian martyrs— Perpetua was a 22-year old mother with a breastfeeding infant and Felicity pregnant at the time of her imprisonment and four days postpartum at the time of her martyrdom in a Roman ampitheatre. They willingly chose to stand firm in their faith and resisted offers to recant their beliefs even in the face of death.

I was talking with one of my clients during her prenatal appointment about how much I am moved by their story and she made this and gifted it to me at her 6 week postpartum appointment. How special 🥹

Choices in birth matter. There is no right or perfect way to give birth to a baby. What matters is that families are honored and the choices ultimately remain theirs. 🔥

A home water birth may be empowering - or a home water birth may be disempowering.

An unplanned cesarean may be disempowering - or a planned cesarean may be empowering.

The difference can be made by the way provider involves and honors a woman’s choices and autonomy throughout the process.

I would like to see AI try.

I’d like to see AI suture a second-degree tear by the light of a bedside lamp. Resolve a shoulder dystocia in the middle of the night. Hold a trembling mother’s hand when fear creeps in. Pray over a family. Offer reassurance when things don’t go according to plan. Celebrate alongside parents as they meet their baby for the very first time.

Birth work is more than information. It’s presence. It’s intuition. It’s skill. It’s human connection.

Our job is safe.

No matter the advances in modern technology, there will always be families who will seek out this kind of love, care, and attention as they bring their babies into the world. No technology can replace the comfort of a trusted hand, a calm voice, and someone who is fully present in life’s most sacred moments. 🤍

Birth work is more than a career.

It is holy ground.

We are invited into some of the most tender, vulnerable, life-changing moments a family will ever experience. And if God has called us to this work, then we cannot shrink back from that calling.

The world doesn’t need more birth workers operating from fear, burnout, or striving.

It needs birth workers who know who they are in Christ. Birth workers who walk in integrity. Birth workers who are willing to do the deep work in their own lives so they can serve families with wisdom, humility, and boldness.

This is just a small clip from a message I recently shared at a Christian doula training.
