It was so meaningful to connect with community members at the Alaska Federation of Natives - Official Page Annual Convention in last week. Among the great group we had representing LifeCenter Northwest were Ginny Fagerstrom, a double lung transplant recipient, and Laura and Dolores Givens, donor Rachel Givens’ mom and grandmother, who shared their impactful personal stories with conference attendees. Thanks also to team members Kristina, Rena, and Kelly.

At our Alaska Donation Celebration hosted at Alaska Native Heritage Center earlier this month, we gathered to honor donors and their families, celebrate recipients, and recognize the healthcare teams who help make donation possible. 💚

In case you missed it, our Community Outreach and Aftercare teams will be hosting LifeCenter's first Día de los Mu***os gathering next week. 🧡🕯️

On Monday, November 2, we'll host a community ofrenda (altar) at our Bellevue office from 10 a.m. to noon, offering a space for reflection and connection for those whose lives have been touched by organ, eye, and tissue donation.

If you are unable to attend in person and you would still like to participate, we welcome you to send us a photo of your family member or friend who you would like to be remembered. You can send us your photo or RSVP by sending our Community Outreach Team an email at [email protected].

We are looking forward to welcoming our community and honoring everyone's loved ones on our community ofrenda.

The Sunnyside Sun recently featured Daria Miller and her ongoing advocacy for organ donation in honor of her son, BJ.

BJ decided to register as a donor when he received his driver’s license. He was motivated to register after watching a television program about organ donation when he was 16 years old. Sadly just days after his 19th birthday, BJ died in a car accident. Honoring BJ's wishes, his kidneys, liver, pancreas, and corneas were donated to six people who were on the waiting list.

Nearly 19 years later, Daria continues to share their family’s story to raise awareness, address misconceptions about donation and encourage families to have these important conversations.

After a devastating car crash, Katherine Screws was left waiting for a lifesaving intestine transplant. Desperate for help, Katherine wrote letters to organ procurement organizations (OPOs) asking how organs are allocated.

OPOs work around the clock to recover organs and tissues for transplant and support grieving donor families, but we also go the extra mile to fiercely advocate for patients like Katherine.

OneLegacy helped Katherine navigate a complex system and advocated for her care — ultimately paving the way for her lifesaving transplant. OPOs are more than just a bridge between donors and recipients; we are tireless advocates who go the distance to save as many people as possible.

A car crash destroyed a 25-year-old Phoenix woman's small intestine, leaving her dependent on IV nutrition and often too sick to get out of bed.

Alaska's News Source stopped by yesterday’s Donation Celebration in and captured a beautiful story of connection between heart transplant recipient Bella Anderson and the donor family of RJ Galeshoff. For Bella, an eagle that visited outside her hospital window before her transplant took on new meaning when she learned that RJ’s family thinks of him whenever they see an eagle. The connections that bring us together sometimes come in the most unexpected forms. 💚🦅

On Sunday, Life Center Northwest hosted a donation celebration event at the Alaska Native Heritage Center, where recipients and families of donors could gather to celebrate the lives that those they’d lost were able to posthumously save.

Together we honored the lives of organ donors, stood alongside their families, celebrated recipients and their journeys, and recognized the healthcare professionals who help make donation and transplantation possible.

One of the stories we were honored to hear today was Bella’s. Ten years ago, Bella received a heart transplant that changed the course of her life. Today on our stage, she shared about the illness that led to her transplant, her experience of meeting her donor RJ’s family, the meaningful connection they’ve built over the years, and the life that has been possible thanks to her new heart.❤️

Bella and RJ’s story is a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of the gift of life.

Thank you for gathering with us and helping us honor the lives and legacies at the heart of donation.

Anyone can become a potential donor, regardless of age or medical condition. For older adults, donation may often take the form of life-saving tissue donation, which can help restore mobility, promote healing, and improve quality of life.

That was the key message at last weekend's event with Seattle Sleepless seniors group.

Many of LifeCenter’s Community Outreach engagements are proposed by people who have witnessed the impact of organ or tissue donation. This outreach opportunity came to be thanks to our donor advocate and connection, Carolyn, whose boyfriend of 11 years became a tissue donor several years ago.

The team was also introduced to attendees by Theresa, whose friend Joe Gardiner was the first organ transplant recipient in the Pacific Northwest. Joe received a heart transplant at the University of Washington on November 18, 1985.

It was a meaningful opportunity to talk about why donation is important at any age and also how it can make a difference in our communities.💚

Even when organs cannot be donated for transplant, tissue donation can make a meaningful difference for people in need of a transplant or reconstructive care. A single tissue donor can help heal more than 75 people through nerve restoration, heart valve replacement, burn treatment and more.

Your age or medical history does not necessarily mean you cannot be a donor. In fact, the oldest known tissue donor was 107 years old. Everyone has the potential to make a difference.
