An anonymous donor has committed $150,000 to help transform WinnMed’s Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine gym and Cardiac Rehabilitation spaces!

The renovation will transform the Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine gym and Cardiac Rehabilitation areas into modern, flexible spaces designed to meet current and future patient needs. Planned improvements include expanded open therapy areas for athletes and rehabilitation patients, upgraded exercise and therapy equipment, improved patient flow and enhanced accessibility to support individualized treatment and recovery programs.

WinnMed Hospice Program Explained at Tuesday’s Lions Meeting

Tuesday, October 13 – Decorah, Iowa

Attendees at the Tuesday night Lions Club meeting were recipients of an interesting and useful presentation detailing the operation of the WinnMed Home Health Hospice program.

Presented by program director Nancy Haberichter and veteran specialist Cherie Leachman, Haberichter detailed the operation and value of the program. Both were guests of Lion Al Bakkum.

The hospice program has been in existence for 60 years and offers both hospital-based and home-based healthcare. The program covers six counties and features 10 nurses, a few home health aides, a couple of chaplains and specialty therapists.

Director Nancy stressed that hospice care is designed to make the patient comfortable and treat their symptoms, not to cure a serious illness. That can include psychological issues and spiritual needs.

But not all care in hospice is hospital based. Palliative care is another option that isn’t hospice based but just focuses on managing symptoms.

“Hospice goes where the patient is,” Nancy commented. “It’s not all based on end-of-life care. It’s based on communicating closely with family and physicians. Some folks actually get better after hospice.”

Perhaps the most important part of the presentation was that the director urges everyone to prepare an Advance Directive—a legal document that states one’s medical care preferences and names a trusted person to make health decisions for them if they become unable to communicate or make their own healthcare choices.

There are three types of Advance Directives…

1) Living Will: Instructive document that specifies which medical treatment you want or refuse if you are terminally ill or in a coma—such as CPR, resuscitation, tube feeding or dialysis.

2) Durable Power of Attorney: A document that names a trusted advocate to speak or make medical decisions for a person.

3) Physicians Orders (POLST/DNR): Actionable medical orders like Do Not Resuscitate or Physicians Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment.

If a parent, sibling, or other first-degree relative has had colon cancer, your risk is higher than average.

Dr. John Vogel, WinnMed family medicine physician, recommends that patients with a first-degree family history discuss a colonoscopy with their healthcare provider rather than relying on stool-based screening tests alone. Depending on your family history, you may also need to:

✔ Begin screening earlier
✔ Have screenings more frequently
✔ Follow a personalized screening plan

Colon cancer rates continue to rise, particularly among younger adults. That's why Dr. Vogel and his colleagues strongly encourage patients to talk with their provider about screening. This is especially important for:

• Adults ages 45 and older who have never been screened, and
• Adults ages 40-45 with a first-degree family history of colorectal cancer, as screening may need to start even earlier depending on the age of their relative at diagnosis.

WinnMed has increased access to colonoscopy services, making it easier for patients to take this important step for their health.
