Summer break isn't just a schedule change, It's a nervous system transition! While we of course love summer, we have to remember that stress is anything that forces our nervous system to have to adapt- and summer sure requires a lot of adaptability!

Less structure doesn't always mean less stress. For a lot of families, it means more dysregulation — the meltdowns, the sleep chaos, the "I'm bored" five minutes after the last day of school.

Here's how to prep:
👉Get adjusted before summer starts. Your kids have been sitting in chairs, carrying heavy backpacks, and holding academic stress for nine months. Your nervous system has been running on school schedules and mental load. Summer is a fresh start, get there with a clean slate.

👉Build a rhythm, not a schedule. Consistent wake times, meal rhythms, daily outdoor time. Your nervous system thrives on predictability, even when life feels loose.

👉 Move outside every day. Swimming, biking, hiking, unstructured play. This is how nervous systems actually decompress after a long school year.

👉 Don’t skimp on your summer care. This is the one we see families skip, and by September, we're starting over. Active summer bodies need support. Growing summer bodies need support. Adjusted families enjoy summer, the rest survive it.
Prep now so that your family can thrive come fall!

one of our favorite topics in the office! what is it and why does it matter?

Your "clumsy" kid isn't careless. Their brain just isn't getting clear signals! Proprioception is your brain's ability to know where your body is in space without looking. Right now, you know where your feet are without glancing down.... thats it! That's proprioception.

When it's off, kids can't accurately feel where their limbs are, can't gauge distance, and use too much or too little force. So they bump into furniture. They trip over nothing. They fall more than other kids. They drop things constantly. Complaints home from school say that "they need to be more careful" or that they "can't control their body," but they're trying. They just can't feel it clearly.

Proprioceptive signals travel through the spine to the brain. When the spine is out of balance (really common in kids), those signals get disrupted. The upper cervical spine especially, C1 and C2, sits right at the brainstem and cerebellum. That's where proprioceptive information gets processed. When that area is off, the whole system gets fuzzy. This is why we see so many kids in the office who started care for coordination and came out of it with more body awareness, fewer falls, more confidence. And why our young athletes absolutely thrive with regular care.

A few things that also support proprioception at home:

👉 Heavy work (pushing, pulling, carrying, jumping, climbing)

👉 Balance activities

👉 Cross-body movements like crawling and swimming

👉Barefoot time (feet are FULL of proprioceptors)

But the foundation is the nervous system. We address the spine first, then build on it. If your child is the "clumsy" one, their body is asking for support.

That overwhelming urge to move your legs at night. The creeping, crawling, tingling that won't quit until you get up... and starts again the second you lie back down. 😩

You've tried magnesium, stretching, warm baths. Nothing sticks.

Here's what's actually happening. Restless leg syndrome is a nervous system communication problem. The nerves controlling your legs run through your lower spine. When that area is out of balance, signals get scrambled and your brain keeps receiving "move your legs" messages even when there's no reason to.

Your legs aren't the problem. The brain-body connection is.

We see this a lot with people who sit for long hours, are pregnant, carry chronic stress, or have old lower back injuries that never fully healed. All of these can disrupt how clearly your brain talks to your legs.

When we address the lower spine, that constant "move, move, move" signal quiets down. Patients tell us things like "I hadn't slept through the night in two years, and after consistent care my legs finally calm down." 💚

If you're dreading bedtime because of your legs, your nervous system is asking for support. Send us a message and let's figure it out.

Hot take: if your chiropractor doesn’t know or ask where you’re at in your cycle, they don’t have the full picture.

Your menstrual cycle isn’t just a period and some mood swings. It’s a full nervous system event, every single month.

Here’s what’s actually happening:

Menstrual phase (Days 1-7) Estrogen and progesterone are at their lowest. Your nervous system is more sensitive, your pain tolerance drops, and your body is asking for rest. This isn’t weakness. It’s biology.

Follicular phase (Days 8-13) Estrogen rises and so does your energy, focus, and stress resilience. This is your power phase. Lean into it.

Ovulation (Days 14-16) Peak everything. Energy, confidence, communication. You were evolutionarily designed to be unstoppable right now.

Luteal phase (Days 17-28) Early on, progesterone has a calming effect. But when it crashes at the end? That’s when the nervous system dysregulates. Hello, anxiety, irritability, bloating, and broken sleep.

This is where chiropractic care gets really cool.

Your upper cervical spine (C1-C2) directly influences the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, the hormonal command center of your body. When that area is balanced, your hormones communicate more clearly, PMS symptoms ease, and your nervous system handles the monthly fluctuations so much better.

We factor in your cycle when we care for you. Because your body is always telling a story, and we want the full picture.

If you’re in the Spring Grove area and want nervous system support that actually meets you where you are, send us a message. We’d love to be a part of your care team.

🔴 RED LIGHT THERAPY 🔴

I love getting to offer red light therapy at Grove because honestly, I wish more people knew about it. It’s one of those things that sounds fancy but is actually doing something really simple: giving your cells the light they need to function better.

Here’s what I mean: your mitochondria (the energy factories inside your cells, yes I’m going to make you think about 7th grade biology for a second) respond to specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light the same way your body responds to sunlight. When they absorb that light, they produce more energy, reduce inflammation, and kickstart repair processes your body is already trying to do on its own.

What that can actually look like for you:

👉 Less inflammation and joint pain
👉 Faster tissue healing
👉 Better sleep (red light supports melatonin production)
👉 Improved skin health and collagen production
👉 Nervous system regulation and mood support
👉 Immune system support

We use it here at Grove as a complement to adjustments, because a regulated nervous system and a body with less inflammation is a body that heals faster and holds its adjustments longer.

It’s one of my favorite little tools in the practice. Pesky sinus infection? Tooth pain? Threw out your low back? Clogged duct? Come get adjusted and then pop on that red light!
