September is Alzheimer's Awareness Month and if you're caring for a parent, spouse, or loved one with memory loss, you already know that conversations don't work the way they used to.
The good news: small changes in how you approach a conversation can make a real difference for both of you.
A few things that help:
Approach from the front and say who you are, so they're not caught off guard.
Keep sentences short and simple, one idea at a time.
Skip the correction, if they misremember a name or a year, meet them where they are instead of setting them straight.
Use their name often. It helps them feel oriented and safe.
Let the quiet moments be okay. Silence isn't a failure of the conversation.
If you're navigating this with someone you love, you're not alone and we're always here if you want to talk it through.
What's one thing that's helped you connect with a loved one who has memory loss? We'd love to hear it in the comments.
