One of my very favorite things as a Pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist and Feeding Specialist is to support toddlers and their families in feeding development 🍽️ Mealtime is such an important part of our lives - nutritionally, emotionally, AND socially. It holds so much potential for connection and growth.

When behaviors, reactions, or disinterest start to appear around the dining table, it can negatively impact the whole dynamic. This can be so disheartening as a caregiver who wants to feed their child well and connect during a meal. Of course there is a level of this in typical development (hello toddler power struggles!), but if meals are becoming a daily struggle that end in tears, punishments, or frustration - I am here for you ❤️ Let’s get to the root of what could be happening! A big perk of offering in-home feeding therapy is that I get to join you at your own table during a meal so I can see firsthand where the struggles are. Then I can offer you guidance on how to support your child and make a therapy plan!

I have been taking it slow in this space for a season. I am still here to support parents and their children in speech, language, and feeding development - always! But I needed a chance to be in the moment with my family, especially with the holidays coming. ❤️

This is your reminder that it is okay to slow down and have a “mundane” day at home with your child. To save the to-do list for tomorrow. To make the hot chocolate and snuggle up. To say yes to your child even if there are chores to be done. These little things can help your child connect with you, which in turn can support their precious development.

For example, I noticed my own child has been stuttering recently. It comes and goes, but it happens when she’s tired or very excited. The other day I had one on one time with her for about an hour in the morning where we read books, played with magnet tiles, and danced to music. I realized later in the day that I hadn’t heard her struggling as much as usual. I’m not saying that our focused time together was the only reason, but there was a difference for sure. We need to fill our kids’ little cups with connection, attention, and love just as much as we need to be filled. So cheers to full cups of love and hot chocolate! ☕️
