I’m excited to announce I am officially a Board Certified Family Practitioner!! Aside from that announcement I thought this would be a good time to share and clear up rumors.

Rumor one: The Birth Center is closing.

Facts: While I have personally decided to retire from midwifery by THE END of the year and not beyond March 27. We are still open. We have midwives that are continuing to do births and will continue to offer births.

Rumor: We aren’t taking new patients at all.

Fact: We are and have been full since the beginning of the year.

We have shifted to a more exclusive model and now have chosen to serve a more select population of clients. We are giving priority to repeat clients or those referred by our clients. We are no longer offering open house as again we are at capacity.

We have an abundance of clients and have decided our best approach to care is serving less clients. So the center will only offer exclusive care to six clients per month instead of our 15-18/ month capacity.

Work life balance is sacred for our staff and we have to care for ourselves and families also. Birth work is a delicate balance and is extremely demanding of your time energy and mental capacities .

So this change is an effort to support staff and the community in a more balanced way. We recognize the demand that needs to be filled but we also recognize the best way to serve the community is to lead by example and caring for our own health is vital for longevity for all.

We have always maintained the mantra of quality over quantity and it’s become apparent over the last couple of years that the quantity of clients was causing a shift in what we are all truly capable of offering and we want the quality of our care to always be the thing that shines through. The best way to do that is to serve the community on a smaller capacity.

Rumor Where are people going for DPM when the center closes?

Fact: DPM will be offered in the annex. We will continue to offer services at this time at the same location and do not intend to move anytime in the foreseeable future.

Oh yes and lastly, we are accepting Direct Primary Care Membership sign up starting June 1 and will be seeing clients no later than mid June for primary care. Our focus will be primarily Pediatrics and Women’s Primary Care including GYN and fertility as usual.

We will only have a limited amount of spots open to sign up and we will be giving priority to our previous clients to sign up first. I know a lot of our families have been eager to transfer their care so we are ready to start signing you up now. If you signed up for our waiting list, you should be receiving an email this week with instructions on how to sign up.
Please call our office to save your spot! Ask for Katie at 541-515-6556.

✨ A new season is unfolding… ✨

After 25 years in women and children’s health, and the past ten years serving families in the community as a Certified Nurse Midwife attending out-of-hospital births, I’m sharing an important transition in my professional journey.

Since 2016, I have had the profound honor of supporting families through pregnancy and birth in the community. When I began offering home birth as a Certified Nurse Midwife, I was the only CNM in Oregon offering home birth in many decades. Over the years it has been incredibly meaningful to watch the landscape evolve and see more CNMs returning to community birth and expanding access to this model of care.

Along the way I have had the privilege of mentoring nursing and midwifery students, supporting newer midwives entering community practice, and building deep friendships with midwives who have gone on to open or lead birth centers of their own. The relationships, the growth of our profession, and the hundreds of families I’ve had the honor to walk alongside have made this work one of the greatest privileges of my life.

Birth work is sacred work — and it is also deeply demanding work. After a year of thoughtful reflection about my health, my family, and the next chapter of my life, I have made the decision to retire from attending births.

This decision comes with immense gratitude for the journey and the community that has supported it.

Because of this transition, Oregon Birth & Wellness Center will no longer be accepting new clients for birth care as I begin shifting my professional focus.

I want to reassure our current clients and community that this will be a gradual transition over the next year. We plan to continue offering birthing services through 2026, though we will gradually reduce the number of births we are accepting as I move toward retirement from birth work and transition into a Direct Primary Care model.

For families currently signed up for care, we will be working thoughtfully and individually with clients to determine the best path forward. Some families will continue their care with me, while others may transition to other trusted providers in the community as we reduce our birth volume. Our goal is to ensure that every family has ample time, clear communication, and supportive options so that this transition is smooth and well supported.

Our incredible staff has been aware of these plans and are thoughtfully exploring the next steps in their own professional journeys as well.

While I am stepping away from birth work, I am not stepping away from caring for women, babies, and families. In fact, I am incredibly excited about what comes next.

I will be transitioning into a Direct Primary Care (DPC) membership model serving women and children. This model will allow me to offer more personalized, relationship-based care focused on prevention, wellness, and long-term health.

The practice will include:
🌿 Holistic pediatric care
🌿 Women’s health and primary care
🌿 Preventive medicine for families
🌿 Integration of both conventional medicine and Chinese medicine principles

Alongside this work, I will also be expanding my Embodied Regulation work — supporting individuals in reconnecting with their nervous systems, resilience, and well-being.

This new hybrid model will allow me to continue supporting mothers, babies, and families — just in a different way, one that is more sustainable for my health and allows me to serve the community in a deeper and longer-term capacity.

There is much more to share about the Direct Primary Care membership services and our evolving offerings, and I look forward to sharing those details soon.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to every family who has trusted me with one of the most sacred moments of life. Your stories, your babies, and your courage will always remain part of my journey.

Here’s to the next chapter — one rooted in health, sustainability, and continued care for families. 💛

More updates to come soon.

What are maternity bundles—and are they required? 🤍

At Oregon Birth & Wellness Center, we believe families should have both quality care and flexibility in how they receive it.

Our standard care includes everything needed for safe, supportive prenatal, birth, and postpartum care. In addition, we offer optional maternity bundles for families who would like enhanced services such as childbirth education, lactation support, prenatal chiropractic care, and other wellness offerings.

Maternity bundles are completely optional. They are not billed to insurance and are an additional out-of-pocket cost for those who choose to include them in their care.

We understand that every family has different needs and budgets. Some choose to add extra support, while others prefer to stay with standard care—and both choices are respected and supported.

Our goal is to provide transparent options so you can make the decision that feels right for your care, your experience, and your family. 🤍

What goes into birth center care? 🤍

At Oregon Birth & Wellness Center, our model is designed to support families with more time, more education, and more personalized care throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Unlike nonprofit organizations, we do not receive grant funding. We are an independently owned and operated healthcare practice, and our care is supported by insurance and client payments so we can continue serving our community.

We also offer flexible options, including standard care and optional maternity bundles with added services like education, lactation support, and more—so families can choose what fits their needs best.

Our goal is simple: to provide thoughtful, high-quality care that supports healthy outcomes and a more connected birth experience for families in our community. 🤍

What Makes Birth Center Care Different?

Birth Center care is often described as more personalized, relationship-based, and supportive than traditional OB care — and it is.

But it’s also important to understand what Birth Center care is designed to do.

As an AABC-accredited Birth Center, Oregon Birth & Wellness provides care for healthy, low-risk pregnancies within established national clinical guidelines for safety.

This includes:
• Evidence-based screening criteria
• Ongoing risk assessment throughout pregnancy
• Clinical recommendations when conditions change
• Consultation or transfer to hospital-based care when medically appropriate

Birth Centers are not home settings — they are licensed healthcare facilities that combine individualized, low-intervention care with clear safety standards.

That means:
✔ Longer prenatal visits
✔ Continuity with known providers
✔ Personalized birth planning
✔ Support for physiologic birth

AND

✔ Established clinical protocols
✔ Emergency preparedness
✔ Consultation & transfer guidelines
✔ Ongoing quality review

Our goal is always to support safe, informed, patient-centered care — including when that means recommending additional evaluation or hospital-based support.

We are proud to offer AABC-accredited Birth Center care to Lane County families.
