The World Cup is all about goals. So is your health.

If you're 45 or older, make a colonoscopy your next goal. Unlike other screening tests, a colonoscopy can help PREVENT and DETECT colon cancer by finding and removing precancerous polyps before they become cancer.

Colon cancer is now the leading cause of cancer death in people under 50, but it is highly treatable when caught early.

So, score one for your future. Schedule your colonoscopy today!

I am a lifelong Cincinnati resident and a proud graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine — my medical roots and my personal life have always been deeply intertwined with this community.

Early in my career as a gastroenterologist, I witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in an era before biologic therapies existed. At that same time, my wife was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. Suddenly, I was not only caring for patients with IBD — I was walking the journey alongside someone I loved. That dual perspective forever shaped the way I practice medicine, the way I teach, and the way I advocate.

My patients challenged me to stay at the cutting edge of science and compassionate care. At home, I was constantly learning, answering questions, and trying to translate a complex disease into something understandable, hopeful, and manageable — especially for young patients who had never imagined their lives would include chronic illness. I came to see IBD care not only as treatment, but as a partnership — helping people build full, meaningful lives in the presence of disease.

Now, nearly 30 years later, I have had the privilege of witnessing extraordinary progress in IBD research and treatment. Therapies that once seemed impossible are now changing lives every day. As I approach the conclusion of my 35-year career in gastroenterology, I look back with deep gratitude — for my patients who trusted me, the students I taught, the colleagues I learned from, and the scientific community that made these advances possible.

I am proud to support the work of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation and deeply inspired by what we can accomplish together through Take Steps — expanding research, accelerating innovation, and improving the lives of those affected by IBD today and for generations to come. CCFA helps patients better understand their disease including dietary advice and many other support mechanisms through their website as well as providing educational opportunities for health care providers.

Join me for Take Steps on June 13th at 10:00 AM at Voice of America for this year’s walk.
