Hey therapist friends! I’m offering a virtual 3 hour training in October that focuses on using DBT skills to address executive function difficulties.

Rather than asking, “Which skill should I teach?” we’ll focus on a different clinical question: “What is getting in the way of action, and which DBT skill is most likely to help?”

You’ll leave with a practical framework for choosing interventions with greater confidence, not simply another collection of worksheets or productivity tips.

Visit dbtozarks.org/therapytrainings for all of the details and to answer questions about CEUs. 🧠

When therapists hear "DBT," they tend to picture comprehensive programs and higher-acuity clients. That's a big part of what DBT is, and it's important work.

And there's a really useful middle ground that doesn't always get talked about: DBT-informed therapy.

It's not about running a full program or shifting your caseload. It's about learning the core skills: distress tolerance, emotion regulation, mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness; and having them available for the clients you're already seeing.

A lot of lower-acuity clients deal with big emotions and dysregulation without needing the intensity of comprehensive DBT. But they'd benefit enormously from a therapist who has those skills in their toolkit.

That's what my skills class is designed for, adding DBT skills to what you already do, not changing your practice.

If that's something you'd like to explore, you can learn more here:

DBT Skill Class for Therapists is an ongoing professional education class for clinicians who want to deepen their understanding of DBT skills, learn how to teach them effectively, and integrate DBT-informed interventions into clinical work in a clear, ethical, and practical way.

I’m currently screening participants for the next module of my Adult DBT Skills Group, which begins September 1 in Springfield.

This class is for adults who feel emotions deeply, become overwhelmed more easily than others seem to, or find themselves shutting down, reacting impulsively, overthinking, avoiding, or struggling to communicate when emotions get intense.

Throughout the module, participants learn practical skills for managing emotions, coping with stressful situations, communicating more effectively, setting boundaries, and responding more intentionally when emotions are high.

The class may be a good fit for someone who:

• Feels emotions deeply or becomes overwhelmed easily
• Knows coping skills but struggles to use them in the moment
• Wants structured, practical tools and opportunities to practice them
• Is highly sensitive or neurodivergent
• Wants to build more confidence in navigating emotions and relationships

The class meets Tuesday evenings from 6:00–7:30 PM at DBT Ozarks. Each module is an eight-week commitment and costs $50 per class. Participants must be at least 18, currently working with an individual therapist, and complete a brief screening before joining.

More information and the screening request form are available here:

Like many other ADHDer’s I can easily hyperfocus my way into a new interest that becomes a little bit of my identity. That’s mostly been a gift for me.

It was around my 10th year as a Social Worker that I became a therapist. It was all accidental, since I had spent 10 years swearing that I would never pursue a clinical path. I was an HIV Case Manager and I loved the med clinic life.

When I relocated to Springfield, I took a job that would require me to do medical Social Work as a Behavioral Health Consultant.

The hours were sparse so the agency had me supplement by filling in part of the week in an outpatient therapy clinic.

I was like a stranger in a strange land. After 10 years in the field, I asked my clinical supervisor what I should say when my first therapy client walked in the room. She lovingly suggested, “hello” and that my Social Work instincts would kick in from there.

I had no idea what DBT therapy was. My supervisor was not trained in it but suggested that almost, if not 100%, of my caseload needed it as a best practice modality.

Working in community mental health requires you to treat who you meet. I saw it as my professional responsibility to get trained in DBT right away so that I could best meet my clients’ needs.

I met so many inspiring DBT therapists in my training.

I transitioned to private practice so that I could better meet my own needs.

I became an active cheerleader in the Ozarks for the modality and started a consultation team of other therapists who were open to learning DBT.

Personal loss struck around the same time that I began my Radically Open DBT training and it turned out to be a treatment that I needed in my own life.

Now that I’m on the other side of survival and nearly 8 years into my DBT career, I focus most of my time on introducing new therapists to the modality and teaching classes to other people who are using DBT skills while actively living their Life Worth Living.

What brought you to DBT?
