🌿 What's the Difference Between a Natural Burial Cemetery and a Conservation Cemetery?

While both offer environmentally friendly burial options, there is one important distinction:

🌱 Natural Burial Cemetery
A natural burial cemetery allows the body to return to the earth with minimal environmental impact. The primary focus is on providing a more natural burial option while maintaining the cemetery in an environmentally responsible way. An example is Glen Forest Cemetery in Yellow Springs, OH.

🌳 Conservation Cemetery
A conservation cemetery includes all the practices of a natural burial cemetery, but goes one step further. Its primary mission is not only burial, but also the permanent protection, restoration, and stewardship of natural land. Burial fees often help fund conservation efforts such as protecting forests, restoring prairies, preserving wildlife habitat, and maintaining open space for future generations. An example is Foxfield Preserve in Wilmot, OH (pictured).

Think of it this way:
🏞️ A natural burial cemetery focuses on how we care for the deceased.
🌳 A conservation cemetery focuses on how we care for both the deceased and the land itself.

Both honor a natural return to the earth, but conservation cemeteries also create a lasting environmental legacy by helping protect ecosystems and wildlife habitat.

🔍 Did you know there are different types of green cemeteries? 🔎

Hybrid 🌻
- Traditional cemeteries that offer designated green burial sections or do not require concrete vaults. There are roughly 395 hybrid options.

Conservation 🌳
- Protected natural habitats or restoration areas where burials directly fund land conservation and preservation. There are around 26 conservation sites.

Natural 🌾
- Dedicated spaces focused entirely on green practices without traditional embalming or non-biodegradable caskets. There are about 99 natural sites.
