Meet the presenter for “From Diagnosis to Direction: Helping Clients with SMI Navigate Employment Pathways,” Doreen Consulmagno LPC, LCADC, ACS, SAC!
 
Doreen has been the Student Assistance Coordinator at Sayreville Middle School since 1999 and is in Private Practice. Before starting in Sayreville, she worked as a licensed clinician in every level of care for adolescent and adult substance use and mental health treatment. Her experience also includes crisis counseling and being an on call clinician for sexual assault victims. Doreen earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Bachelor of Science in Management Science from Kean University in 1992, and earned a Master of Arts in Counselor Education from Kean University in 1996. Doreen is an Approved Clinical Supervisor, providing guidance and supervision to Licensed Associate Counselors (LAC) pursuing hours toward full licensure as an Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). Doreen has an interest in the law, and is a divorce mediator, trained by the New Jersey Association of Professional Mediators (NJAPM). Doreen has taught as an Adjunct Professor, and has presented at Statewide Conferences and for Districts throughout New Jersey. Her presentations have included topics on teen su***de, teen trends, substance trends, va**ng, adult substance use disorder, DSM-5 and levels of care, codependency and anxiety. Doreen is the current ASAP-NJ 2nd Vice President of the Association of Student Assistance Professionals of New Jersey (ASAP-NJ). She has served on the ASAP-NJ Executive Committee for the last 20 years. Doreen has received many accolades throughout her career. She was awarded the ASAP-NJ’s prestigious Jim Mulhern award in 2013. Additionally, in Sayreville School District, she won the “Teacher of the Year” in 2012-2013, and was awarded the “Educational Service Professional of the Year” in 2018-2019 and in 2023-2024.

Join us for an informative training designed to help professionals better understand Serious Mental Illness (SMI) and support individuals in pursuing meaningful employment opportunities.

Participants will learn to:
✅ Differentiate between Any Mental Illness (AMI) and Serious Mental Illness (SMI), including key diagnostic, functional, and systemic distinctions.
✅ Explore the impact of SMI on quality of life, employment barriers, workplace dynamics, and the benefits of supported employment models.
✅ Review evidence-based practices commonly used with individuals experiencing AMI and SMI, including Motivational Interviewing, Illness Management and Recovery (IMR), and peer support approaches.
✅ Gain an overview of New Jersey’s mental health system of care, including levels of service and the legal criteria for involuntary commitment.

Rutgers University is conducting a research study exploring the lived experiences of spouses caring for partners with serious mental illness, including schizophrenia spectrum disorders, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder.

Participants will complete a 2-week online study sharing their experiences through short journal-style reflections, videos, audio notes, and photos — all from home and on their own schedule. Participants who complete the study will receive a $50 e-gift card and caregiver wellness resources.
