• Asymmetry: one half doesn’t match the other
• Border: edges are irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined
• Color: multiple shades (tan, brown, black, red, white, or blue) or color changes
• Diameter: larger than 6 mm (about the size of a pencil eraser) or growing
• Evolving: any change in size, shape, color, or sensation
