Today I am at a loss. Music has been part of my life as far back as I can remember. I loved hearing it. I loved singing it and playing it and it’s tied to some of my most cherished memories with family and friends and especially with my mom who passed just over two decades ago. One of those most cherished memories was her singing in the car with all of her heart and joy, and the song playing was Applejack by Dolly Parton. I was even blessed to see Dolly in concert back in 2016 and she played this song and I think I was one of a handful of people in the audience who knew it and was able to sing along. 🥰
I am sure Dolly is going to be so busy in heaven meeting all the people who want to welcome her, but I’d like to think that somewhere along the way Mom‘s going to go have a conversation or a good old sing-along.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of those who loved her and her music and who grieve this loss. Her fierceness and femininity were powerful and one in the same. She lived a life that reminded us all to go after our dreams, serve and love others, and find the joy in everyday life. So that is my challenge for you. Be like Dolly in one way, every day.

I talk a lot about nervous system regulation like using breathwork, grounding techniques, and mindfulness. But one of the most powerful, biologically wired tools for finding calm, especially for me, isn't a technique at all. It’s a person.

In clinical terms, our nervous systems aren't designed to self-regulate in isolation all the time. Through co-regulation, our autonomic nervous system mirrors the calm, grounded state of someone we trust. When we are around our "safe people," our brain receives strong safety cues, allowing our sympathetic nervous system (our "fight-or-flight" response) to step down and inviting our ventral vagal parasympathetic state, the system responsible for connection, rest, and digest, to take over.

Recently, I decided to practice what I preach. I was able to "run away" for a quick getaway with my son to visit my parents at the lake.

Unplugging from the daily grind, watching my son enjoy time with his grandparents, and soaking in the quiet by the water provided a profound sense of down time and genuine nervous system regulation. It was a gentle reminder that even as clinicians and caregivers, filling our own cups by returning to our 'safe' is essential for sustained well-being.
