When a person's heart suddenly stops, the clock that matters most starts running immediately, because the chance of survival falls with every minute that passes without someone starting CPR. Hospitals and ambulances do extraordinary work, but they often cannot reach that first, decisive window, and Sweden decided to fill it with ordinary people.

The country built a system in which trained volunteers register their phones and agree to receive an alert the instant a suspected cardiac arrest is reported somewhere near them. When an emergency call comes in, the dispatcher pings the ambulance and the nearby volunteers at the same moment, sending those volunteers the address so they can respond.

Those volunteers drop whatever they are doing and head straight for the location to begin chest compressions, keeping blood and oxygen moving through a person whose own heart has failed. The effect on timing is striking, because in roughly 40 percent of cases one of these texted strangers arrives before the ambulance does.

The whole idea rests on nothing more complicated than a text message and a pool of people willing to run toward an emergency, and yet it buys the minutes that so often decide whether someone lives or dies. It is a reminder that some of the most powerful public health tools have less to do with machines or medicines than with a well-organized willingness among neighbors to help.

This is truly inspiring! 💙

At Oregon CPR, we believe every member of our community can be a lifesaver — and this story proves exactly why. Did you know that about 70 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in a home or a home-like setting? If you give CPR in an emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love. Lives can be saved when more people learn CPR and know how to use an AED. Be the difference for your loved ones. Learn how to provide CPR and use an AED today!

To any community member who wants to be prepared like Tammie and Nayla: Oregon CPR offers free hands-only CPR training. Together, we can build a community where everyone is ready to save a life. 💪
