💛 August is National Appendix Cancer Awareness Month 💛

Cancer of the appendix is an extremely rare cancer, and in August we are bringing it into the light to honor those who have been diagnosed!

You can have appendix cancer without developing symptoms. Or you may not notice symptoms until the tumor has spread. Appendix cancer symptoms vary from person to person and may include:

Appendicitis (inflammation or infection of your appendix).
Bloating (fullness or tightness in your belly).
Fluid buildup in your abdomen (ascites).
Increase in waist size.
Pain in your abdomen or pelvis.
Changes in bowel habits (including diarrhea).
Nausea and vomiting.
Feeling full soon after you start eating (early satiety).

Be aware. Be mindful. Be supportive.

If you've been in our building, you may have met Jessica.

Jessica is our Outreach Coordinator and oversees our Wig Salon, where she provides no-cost wigs to individuals throughout our region who are undergoing cancer treatment.

Recently, she celebrated her 200th wig appointment—a milestone that represents 200 patients who have been met with compassion, dignity, and support during a difficult time.

For many, choosing a wig is about more than hair. It's about feeling like yourself again. Jessica's kindness and genuine care help make every appointment a welcoming and uplifting experience.

We're grateful for the difference Jessica makes each day and proud to offer this service at no cost to anyone in our community undergoing cancer treatment, regardless of where they receive care.

If you or someone you know could benefit from our Wig Salon, we're here to help.

Cancer doesn't always look the way we expect.

Zack Defreitas' story reminds us that colorectal cancer can affect younger adults and that awareness, early detection, and access to compassionate care can make a difference.

We're proud to partner with Gonzo’s Legacy: The Zack Defreitas Project as the title sponsor of the 4th Annual Skate For A Cure, supporting efforts to raise awareness, advance cancer research, and honor Zack's legacy by investing in the health of our community.

Together, we can turn awareness into action.

Think you're too young? Think again.
Think screening can't save lives? Think again.
Think hope isn't here? Think again.

Join us on July 25 at the Nelson Center as we stand with Gonzo's Legacy in the fight against colorectal cancer.

Illinois residents will have easier access to life-saving lung cancer screenings and advanced technology thanks to the new Amy Keil Schmidt Early Lung Cancer Detection Program, created to honor the Springfield attorney.

Prior to her death last year, Schmidt emphasized the importance of early cancer detection in a Facebook post: "If caught at Stage 1, totally treatable. It can happen to you, don’t let it."
