Illinois should protect SNAP for children, seniors, disabled residents, and working families who truly qualify.

But Illinois also has to run the program correctly.

Now the federal government is shifting more of SNAP’s cost to the states. Illinois taxpayers could eventually be responsible for hundreds of millions more if Illinois does not fix its accuracy problem. Compassion without accountability is not sustainable.

Verify eligibility. Pay the right amount. Stop waste. Correct mistakes. Help people who can work get connected to real jobs and training.

• Loss of privacy

• Ask what would feel safer.

WHEN THE TEARS DON’T MATCH THE FEELING

Sudden crying or laughter does not always reflect how a person feels inside.

Pseudobulbar affect, also called PBA, involves sudden and difficult-to-control episodes of crying or laughing. The reaction might seem stronger than the situation or completely unrelated to what is happening.

PBA has been reported in people living with neurological conditions such as dementia, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, and ALS.

The person is not being dramatic or seeking attention. Protect their dignity. Stay calm. Reduce attention from others. Document what happened before, during, and after the episode.

Ask the healthcare provider:

“Do these episodes fit pseudobulbar affect, and what evaluation is appropriate?”

Do not dismiss a new behavior as “just dementia.” Sudden symptoms with facial drooping, weakness, speech trouble, or confusion require an immediate 911 call.
