A grill is probably not something you expect to find outside of a hospital, but we pull this thing out about once a month to host a celebration lunch.

This month, we fired up the grill in honor of National Emergency Nurses Week.

As the region's only burn center and as a level 1 trauma center, we see some of the most severe injuries, and our emergency room nurses are there to care for our patients in some of the scariest and most difficult moments of their lives.

Without a doubt, this team is absolutely worthy of the term healthcare hero.

If you ever find yourself in our heart hospital, chances are, you will get a bright red, heart-shaped pillow to make your recovery a little more comfortable.

Those pillows were handmade by our volunteers and the Missouri State University Pre-Med Club. They made 120 pillows in four hours, and it was the perfect example of how caring for our patients and our community extends beyond the walls of the hospital and our clinics.

Thank you to all the students who helped us re-stock our pillow supply and to our volunteers who play a critical role in the care we provide patients.

Every year, our volunteer program continues to grow, and we welcome all ages and experience levels. We're incredibly proud of the work our volunteers complete, and we're even more proud of the fact that since 2023, 98 volunteers have transitioned into paid Mercy caregivers.

All too often, a disability stops someone from applying for a job they're excited about and qualified for.

We hope that today's inclusive hiring event removed some of those barriers and made it a little easier for people to have the confidence and support needed to get the job they've been dreaming of.

And if anyone was feeling stressed or unsure of themselves, Diamond the therapy dog was there to offer love and snuggles.

If you've been to our hospital cafeteria in the morning, you know how much we enjoy a good pancake, so we were really excited to learn that students from the Missouri State PA Program hosted a pancake breakfast fundraiser for the MSU Care Clinic.

Thank you to all the students involved! The MSU Care Clinic provides free medical care those in need, and we're proud to have been part of this work for more than a decade.

This fundraiser warmed our hearts and got us thinking of second breakfast.

Usually this time of year, we're talking about the arrival of flu and cold season. And while those topics are definitely bubbling up, our infectious disease team including Dr. Julio Nasim has been busy answering questions about two other not-so-common diseases: the plague and West Nile Virus.

West Nile Virus: https://bit.ly/4ijWAq9

Plague: https://bit.ly/3TRuo4L

Word of a potential plague outbreak in Russia this week has stirred fears about what could happen if it were to reach the United States.

For 20 years, Pam Gavin never missed her annual mammogram. She had no family history of breast cancer. Every time, everything turned out fine.

After a routine mammogram earlier this year, things were different.

With support from her family, faith and care team, Pam underwent a lumpectomy, radiation treatment and ongoing medication. Just four months after her diagnosis, she completed treatment and rang the bell as a cancer survivor.

"If I had missed this mammogram, my story would be very different. Early detection saves lives."

Art therapy night is kicking off at our Bolivar multi-specialty clinic Friday, October 16, and we can't wait!

Dr. Gbemisola Johnson is the mastermind behind this event. As a family medicine physician, Dr. Johnson weaves art into her treatment plans for patients. She's seen how lifestyle-based care can be especially effective when it includes art and creativity.

If you've ever found yourself doodling, you know that art is a great way to reduce stress and tap into joy. Our first art therapy night will begin at 7 p.m. and wrap up at 9 p.m.

Paint kits are $10, and clay kits are $13. Space is limited, so register at mercy.net/ArtTherapyNight

See you all there!

Our providers got away from the clinic and our hospital last weekend for our annual family fun event, and we ended the day feeling extra-grateful to have such a talented and dedicated group of caregivers who have chosen to put down roots here in Springfield.

Ready for flu season? 🍂 Now’s a good time to get your vaccines on the calendar. Flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccines each have different timing recommendations. Here’s when to get each one:

Flu: September or October is the best time to get vaccinated for the fall flu season, but it’s still a good idea to get your vaccine later in the season. The vaccine takes about two weeks to become fully effective.

COVID-19: The COVID-19 vaccine was recently updated, and with the respiratory season upon us, receiving this vaccine now will provide the best protection (assuming you received the older vaccine more than three months ago). Additional doses may be recommended based on age, vaccination history and immune status. When additional updates to the vaccine happen, immunization is recommended ASAP, but no sooner than three months after your last COVID-19 vaccine.

RSV: Eligible adults should get the RSV vaccine between August and October, or any time of year. You do not need to get an RSV vaccine every year.

Not sure which vaccines you need or when to get them? Talk with your healthcare provider.

Rural health challenges require local solutions and strong partnerships! We're proud to join Heartland Whole Health Institute and partners across Arkansas in the Rural Health Transformation Program, working to create healthier communities and improve access to care where it's needed most.

Big news for rural health in Arkansas.

Heartland Whole Health Institute is proud to convene six Arkansas health care organizations through Heartland Whole Health Connect, a new rural health initiative supported through $8.4 million from Arkansas' Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP).

Together with Mercy, Community Clinic, Boston Mountain Rural Health Center, North Arkansas Regional Medical Center, St. Bernards Healthcare, and Arkansas CPESN, we’ll work to expand access to primary and preventive care, strengthen chronic disease management, increase telehealth and remote care, and advance whole-person care closer to home.

We’re excited for what this investment makes possible for Arkansas and what we can learn together to help shape the future of rural health across the country.
