🌱 Purslane: A Garden Nuisance, or Manna from Heaven? 🌱
A heartfelt update and herbal insight from SNH Director, David Christopher, MH:
We have maintained a backyard vegetable garden for over fifty years and have gratefully enjoyed its abundant yields. However, due to my wife’s passing, alongside shifting schedules and commitments, I decided to give the land a well-deserved and overdue sabbatical this year.
The ground was not tilled, and the water was turned off. The Purslane, however, decided to flourish and will not be denied!
Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) is an amazing gift from a loving Creator that has volunteered and been with us for many years. While most gardeners treat it as a nuisance to be pulled and discarded, I treat it as comfort food—manna from heaven. It soothes me both physically and mentally.
Here is why this resilient plant is a nutritional and medicinal powerhouse:
✨ Unmatched Heart Health: It is the highest green plant source of Omega-3 fatty acids, making it a fantastic preventative for cardiovascular disease.
✨ Vitamins & Minerals: It boasts six times more beta-carotene than carrots and is a rich source of vitamins A, C, E, B complex, calcium, magnesium, zinc, and iron.
✨ Deeply Soothing: Chewing the leaves and stems reveals a mucilaginous texture that soothes all tissues in the body, including the skin, intestines, and eyes.
✨ Cellular Protection: It is rich in flavonoids, the cell-protectant glutathione, and powerful antioxidant alkaloids found in its reddish stems.
✨ Rest & Recovery: It is highly anti-inflammatory and even contains naturally occurring melatonin to help with sleep!
Even in the garden, it is a helper. Its shallow roots don't rob deeper vegetables of nutrients; instead, it acts as a living ground cover, keeping the soil moist and bringing nutrients closer to the surface.
Let us honor Hippocrates and God. Instead of stockpiling dangerous medications, let's learn about, stock up on, and use the incredible medicinal foods growing all around us!
