What exactly is a D.O.? 🤔

The answer is actually pretty simple.

Here's a quick overview of osteopathic medicine, what the letters "D.O." mean, and why that philosophy has always felt like a natural fit for family medicine and Mountain Roots. 🌿

Found an old photo this weekend from my time working as a medical assistant in dermatology before medical school. 🌿

Funny how some parts of medicine come full circle. I still enjoy helping patients navigate common skin concerns like acne, rashes, and changing skin lesions, along with the in-office procedures and treatments that can help diagnose and manage them.

Looking back, I see now how those early experiences helped shape the approach to medicine I still value today.

Family medicine includes more than checkups and prescriptions. 🌿

Many common skin and minor office procedures can often be handled right here in the clinic — including skin biopsies, lesion removals, cryotherapy, wound care, and more.

One of the goals at Mountain Roots is to make care more accessible, convenient, and personal for our community.

Stress is part of life — but how we respond to it can make a real difference in our health and wellbeing. 🌿

Taking time to rest, move your body, eat intentionally, connect with others, spend time outdoors, or simply slow down for a few moments can all be part of caring for your health.

As Lifestyle Medicine Week comes to a close, I hope this series has highlighted how everyday habits can meaningfully impact overall health and wellbeing.

Thank you for following along this week and being part of the Mountain Roots community.

In a world where so much interaction happens through screens, real-life connection still matters. 🌿

Social media can help people stay connected across distance, but meaningful in-person relationships and conversations remain important for helping us feel grounded, reduce stress, and feel supported by the people around us.

Sometimes good health looks more like simply being present with the people around us.

Social connection is a bigger part of health than many people realize. 🌿

Strong relationships and supportive communities have been linked to lower stress levels, improved mental health, better sleep, healthier blood pressure, and even longer life expectancy. Positive social interaction can help reduce feelings of isolation and support overall emotional and physical well-being.

Even small moments of connection — a conversation, shared meal, or time with loved ones — can make a meaningful difference.

Sleep needs change throughout life — but quality sleep remains important at every age. 🌿

Most adults need about 7–9 hours of sleep each night, while children and teens generally need more to support growth, learning, and development.

Restorative sleep supports both physical and mental health, and it plays an important role in recovery, memory, focus, and overall well-being.

Sleep is one of the most overlooked foundations of health — but it impacts nearly everything. 🌿

When we consistently miss sleep, it can affect:
• Energy and focus
• Mood and stress levels
• Appetite and metabolism
• Immune function
• Work, school, and athletic performance

Good sleep isn’t a luxury. It’s part of preventive health.
