Lying is behavior.

But like most behavior, it has something underneath it.

A child may be protecting themselves from getting in trouble.
Protecting themselves from shame.
Protecting a feeling they do not yet know how to name.
Protecting the relationship they are afraid could feel less safe.

When we only focus on stopping the lie, we can miss the need beneath it.

Curiosity helps us go deeper.

“What were you afraid would happen if you told me?”
“What felt hard to say?”
“How can we make this right together?”

This is not permissive.

It is connected accountability.
