On Saturday, October 24, I’ll be heading out to The Nature Institute in Godfrey for an Autumn Forest Bathing + Nature Therapy session, and this is one I’m especially excited about.

There’s something about getting a little outside the city this time of year.

The drive starts changing, the colors get better, and it begins to feel like you’ve gone somewhere even though you really haven’t gone very far.

So I’m inviting you to make a day of it.

Take the scenic drive. Watch the foliage change along the way. Spend the morning with me in the woods slowing down, engaging your senses, and actually experiencing autumn instead of watching it fly past from the car window.

And afterward, anyone who wants to keep the day going is invited to join me for an optional community lunch in Grafton before heading home.

Come alone, bring a friend, or turn it into your own little autumn escape.

Last night during Forest Bathing at the Missouri Botanical Garden , we got into a really interesting conversation about how nature might experience us.

We talked specifically about trees, whether and how they communicate with us, and whether people who lived much closer to the natural world than most of us do now might have been better at noticing or understanding that communication.

I was still thinking about it on my walk this morning when I started picking up leaves that caught my attention.

Why that one?

Out of all the leaves on the ground, why did I notice the bright red one? Or the one halfway between green and pink? Why do certain trees, colors, shapes or textures seem to pull us toward them while we walk right past others?

Which, naturally, led me to create a highly scientific Autumn Leaf Personality Test. 😂🍂

Obviously, I don’t think your favorite leaf can actually tell me your personality. But I do think it’s interesting to notice what we’re drawn to in the natural world and to get curious about why.

So swipe through and pick the leaf you were immediately drawn to. Don’t think too hard about it.

Then tell me your number in the comments and what you think your choice says about you.

And if you want to take last night’s conversation one step further: if you were the tree, what do you think it might say about you?

I’ll consult the trees and report back. 😂🌳

I’m jess!

Well hello, lots of new friends here lately! 🌿

I’m so glad you’re here.

I’m Jess, the person behind Urban Forest Therapy. I’m a Forest & Nature Therapy Guide here in St. Louis, a mom, lifelong journaler, chronic question-asker, and someone who is very easily distracted by an interesting tree, patch of moss, or particularly good light coming through the leaves.

A lot of what I’m about comes down to a pretty simple idea: we don’t have to go far to find nature.

I don’t think nature connection has to mean hiking somewhere remote, knowing the names of every plant, or having hours of free time. I’m much more interested in what happens when we start paying attention to the natural world that’s already woven into our everyday lives.

That’s what I explore here, and it’s at the heart of the Forest Bathing experiences I guide around St. Louis too.

You’ll find a lot about slowing down, reclaiming some of your attention, getting outside more often, noticing the seasons as they’re actually happening, and building more real-life connection and community along the way.

And I should probably tell you that I’m practicing all of this right alongside you. I have a phone. I get too busy. I forget to go outside. I spend too much time on Instagram while telling everyone else to put their phones down. 😂

But I keep coming back.

So if any of that sounds like your kind of thing, welcome. I’m really glad you found your way here. 💚

Since there are so many new faces, tell me something about you. Where are you from, and what brought you here?

Last night we welcomed autumn together. 🍂

We wandered through Forest Park, spent some time noticing what was changing around us, and made a little room to notice what might be changing within us too.

We gathered flowers, leaves, grasses and other bits of the season to create an autumn mandala together. We spent time with the trees. We wrote down what we were ready to leave behind and what we wanted to carry with us into this next season. And as it got dark, we gathered around candlelight for tea, snacks and conversation.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how easy it is to move from one season into another without really acknowledging that anything has changed. Last night felt like the opposite of that.

We noticed, we marked it, we crossed the threshold together.

I think that might be one of my favorite things about gathering people in this way. There’s something different about making space to pay attention alongside other people. 💞 The sense of community formed by perfect strangers in just a couple hours is mind blowing and a beautiful affirmation of humanity and remembrance that we are all interconnected.

Thank you to everyone who spent the Equinox with me. What a beautiful way to begin autumn. 🍁 How are you welcoming Autumn?

Happy Equinox! 🍂

Today we cross into autumn, and I’m thinking about how easy it is to move from one season into the next without really noticing that we’ve arrived.

So today, I’m paying attention. To the changing light, the cooler air, what’s shifting outside and what’s shifting in me too.

No big resolutions or expectations.

Just a moment to notice where I am in the year and welcome what’s next.

Wishing you a beautiful first day of autumn.

However you spend it, I hope you find a moment to step outside and be here for it. 🍁
