Ready for flu season? 🍂 Now’s a good time to get your vaccines on the calendar. Flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccines each have different timing recommendations. Here’s when to get each one:

Flu: September or October is the best time to get vaccinated for the fall flu season, but it’s still a good idea to get your vaccine later in the season. The vaccine takes about two weeks to become fully effective.

COVID-19: The COVID-19 vaccine was recently updated, and with the respiratory season upon us, receiving this vaccine now will provide the best protection (assuming you received the older vaccine more than three months ago). Additional doses may be recommended based on age, vaccination history and immune status. When additional updates to the vaccine happen, immunization is recommended ASAP, but no sooner than three months after your last COVID-19 vaccine.

RSV: Eligible adults should get the RSV vaccine between August and October, or any time of year. You do not need to get an RSV vaccine every year.

Not sure which vaccines you need or when to get them? Talk with your healthcare provider.

Rural health challenges require local solutions and strong partnerships! We're proud to join Heartland Whole Health Institute and partners across Arkansas in the Rural Health Transformation Program, working to create healthier communities and improve access to care where it's needed most.

Big news for rural health in Arkansas.

Heartland Whole Health Institute is proud to convene six Arkansas health care organizations through Heartland Whole Health Connect, a new rural health initiative supported through $8.4 million from Arkansas' Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP).

Together with Mercy, Community Clinic, Boston Mountain Rural Health Center, North Arkansas Regional Medical Center, St. Bernards Healthcare, and Arkansas CPESN, we’ll work to expand access to primary and preventive care, strengthen chronic disease management, increase telehealth and remote care, and advance whole-person care closer to home.

We’re excited for what this investment makes possible for Arkansas and what we can learn together to help shape the future of rural health across the country.

Minimally invasive tubular retractors allow for standard surgical techniques through smaller incisions. This results in lower rates of infection and bleeding, faster return to work, and lower narcotic usage. A 2cm incision is performed and a series of small tubes dilate up a tract to the spine. The center tubes are removed and surgery is performed through the largest remaining tube. Pictured is a large disc herniation which once removed resulted in instant relief from sciatica.

Colloid cysts are embryonic remnants entrapped within the roof of the third ventricle. They are typically asymptomatic, found incidentally and often remain unchanged in size. However, they can occasionally enlarge resulting in obstructive hydrocephalus and even sudden death. Here an endoscopic colloid cystectomy with fenestration of the septum pellucidum is performed in order to restore patency of the CSF pathways.

What happens when you mount a linear accelerator on a production line robot? Precision radiation at 1/3 the time of our prior stereotactic radiosurgery unit. Mercy unveiled our newly installed CyberKnife and we began treating patients this week. This minimally invasive technology allows treatment of even the deepest brain tumors without incisions or a hospital stay.

Trigeminal neuralgia is commonly caused by neurovascular conflict between the superior cerebellar artery and the trigeminal nerve. Microvascular Decompression(MVD) is the most effective treatment and results in sustained pain relief for ~80-90% of patients at 5 years from surgery. A quarter-sized craniectomy is used to directly decompress the trigeminal root entry zone at the brainstem.

Trigeminal Neuralgia is a debilitating disease resulting in severe lancinating facial pain. Percutaneous balloon compression rhizotomy is a treatment option which injures the gasserion ganglion and trigeminal nerve, diminishing transmission of pain signals. A needle is inserted from the cheek to the base of the skull. A balloon is placed intracranially into Meckel’s cave through an oval shaped hole (foramen ovale) which transmits the 3rd division of the trigeminal nerve. The balloon is then inflated and takes on a classic pear shape. This short procedure results in ~75% sustained pain relief at 5 years.

Subdural Hematomas most commonly arise from traumatic injury to bridging veins resulting in bleeding between the dura and the brain. They occur in both young and old people and like their epidural counterparts can be life threatening. Here a craniectomy is performed for evacuation, the brain is allowed to swell through the defect, and an intracranial pressure monitor placed. Reconstruction is completed with a loose duraplasty and a sheet of PTFE to allow for an easier future cranioplasty.
