WashU OT's specialized electives are giving OT students the chance to explore emerging areas of occupational therapy and deepen their understanding of practice across a wide range of settings. The electives, which so far have included courses in hand therapy, maternal health, deafness and OT, hospital based pediatrics and more, have become a defining part of the WashU OT experience for our students. The OT with Children, Youth, and Families course hosted a playdate today for children ages 5–10 of all abilities. Students prepared engaging activities, adjusted them to children’s skills and interests, explored child development through hands-on experience, and had some fun along the way!

We loved spending the morning with our young participants, thank you to the families who took time today to help our students learn!

Dr. Kerri Morgan, PI of the Enabling Mobility in the Community Lab and a 4-time Paralympic medalist, joined the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Day hosted by the St. Louis Sports Commission at Sumers Recreation Center on WashU’s Danforth Campus! 🌟As a special guest speaker, she encouraged kids to try a variety of Olympic sports alongside other champions, including six-time Olympic medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee. 🏅

Events like this help inform Kerri’s research with her lab by showing them how to create more accessible, enjoyable, and meaningful opportunities for people of all abilities to be active. These experiences help guide their work by connecting research to real-life needs and showing practical ways to support people with disabilities in moving in ways that feel achievable and rewarding.
