"My kidney transplant journey started in 1983 when I was hospitalized at Methodist Hospital in Omaha right after graduation. I was diagnosed with membranous glomerulonephritis and was pretty sick most of the summer losing almost 75 lbs.
I had a scholarship to play football that fall at the University of Nebraska-Omaha but my playing days were over. Fast forward to 1988 when my kidney function decreased to where I would have to start dialysis or receive a transplant.

My sister stepped forward and donated one of her kidneys and gave me the gift of life. She recovered after the surgery but I went through two rejection episodes spending a couple of months in and out of the hospital. Once my anti-rejection medications were adjusted, I was finally able to leave the hospital and not look back.
I've been blessed with 38 years of normal kidney function and able to graduate from college, get married and raise a family of three children. Our first grandchild should be born in the next week.

I've been able to volunteer as a coach for many sports, serve as a Y-Pal with the YMCA, volunteered for the Boy Scouts of America, and mentor for kidney transplant candidates and recipients.

All of this happened because my sister gave me a second chance at a better quality of life. I have been blessed but there are so many others out there waiting for their opportunity to enjoy a better quality of life, please consider donation and providing the gift of life."

"I hope to hear from more of the recipients of my son’s organs. He passed away on March 22, 2020. I heard from the little girl who received his heart. It helps to hear from those who survived, so please continue to keep in contact with donor families. He lives on through them."

"I received my double transplant in February — a kidney and pancreas. I am proud of my scars, and I’m proud to show them, even when no one asks. To me, they are reminders of everything I have been through and of the incredible sacrifice someone made to become a hero — not only for me, but for every person whose life was changed through organ donation.

I waited years to be able to say I was an organ recipient, and now I’m equally proud to say I am also signed up to be an organ donor.

I encourage everyone to become a donor. Death is inevitable for all of us, but even in death, we have the opportunity to give life. Organ donation is one of the greatest gifts a person can give — a blessing not only to recipients, but to their families as well."

"My son, Blake, was an organ donor. We lost him to a diaphragmatic hernia, which is a rare condition.

When Blake got his driver’s license, he was asked if he wanted to be an organ donor. I’ll never forget his response. He said, ‘Yes, I want to do that.’

I later heard from one of his recipients. She was a college student who was very active. She played basketball, ran track and did all kinds of activities, but she was no longer able to do those things. Blake gave her her active life back.

I was so happy Blake was able to do that, and I know Blake would be happy, too."

"God bless organ donors. My husband received a heart transplant in 1996 and lived for 17 years afterward. His donor was a wonderful young man named Chris. We were fortunate to meet his family about two years after the transplant.

Pictured are members of our family alongside Chris’ donor family, including his mother, Bonnie; his brother, Brian; Brian’s wife, Ellen; our daughter, Kristi; and Pat, the heart recipient.

The blessing they gave us is something we could never thank them enough for, and our hearts hurt deeply for his parents and brother. It was a bittersweet time for us, but we are still in touch, mostly through his mom, my daughter and me. She has always been so gracious to us, and I have cried many tears for her.

Please know your son, and your family, gave the greatest gift someone could ever receive. I’m adding you to my prayers, as I know your grief is fresh and so very hard. May the Lord bless you always, and I hope our Chris and my husband welcomed your son into heaven." 🙏💙💙💙🪽🕊️🪽⭐️💫

"My husband, Scott Nesbitt, a healthy 47-year-old high school English teacher, was suddenly struck with nausea and high fever starting on a Saturday the day before Mother’s Day in 2009.

When he did not feel any better, and in fact, got worse, he made an appointment with the doctor a day later, who at the time also ruled him with a possible virus. A few more days passed, and he was worse and admitted to our local hospital, where his liver counts were in the high thousands. Our local doctor consulted with another hospital's liver team and was later transported to their hospital.

After three days of worsening health conditions and no idea as to 'why,' he was immediately put on the national transplant waiting list in search of a liver. He had so much against him by this time; the only organs unaffected were his skin and heart functions, he had a rare blood type, they had to find an exact match and his health had deteriorated. We were told even a hangnail bleed would be detrimental, and the amount of time to have this happen was quickly diminishing! He did not have long to live.

Hours passed, and the condition of his health looked hopeless. When the nurse came running to tell me that the organ donation team had flown to another state to retrieve a match, it was news I needed to repeat twice!

The surgery team was ready upon arrival of the liver, and the surgery was a success! We cannot thank the doctors enough for their expertise and networking to save his life, along with respectfully connecting us to our donor’s family.

We also thank the family of our donor and pray for them always and value our relationship with them with continued contact. In May, we will celebrate 17 years since the transplant! Scott has seen his children graduate, two children get married, six grandchildren and many memories made with his entire family and friends! We continue to spread the news of organ donation anywhere we can and continue to celebrate life!"

We recently hosted our annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon to recognize those who regularly dedicate their time to our mission. Our volunteers often assist with event preparation, blanket making, and assembling packets for donor families. Many of them serve as public speakers by sharing their personal connection to organ, eye, and tissue donation.

We sincerely thank all of our volunteers for their time and commitment. Their passion for education and advocacy within our community is deeply admired and appreciated. 💙💚

When June was younger, her brother, Brian, went into kidney failure. Her dad, a Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War, was able to be Brian's living kidney donor.

After nearly 20 years with his donated kidney, Brian was in need of another transplant. Now much older, June was able to get tested to be her brother's living donor, and in 2005, June and Brian underwent a successful transplant. Thanks to the generosity of June and her dad, their family had many more years with Brian, but sadly, Brian passed away from organ failure in 2014.

Now, June is a living kidney donor herself and an advocate for donation, volunteering and competing in the Transplant Games of America. 💙💚
