Bernard was admitted to a hospital with generalized weakness, lightheadedness, vomiting, altered mental status, hallucinations, pain on the left side of his chest, and shortness of breath. He was consequently diagnosed with a left pleural effusion (buildup of fluid between the lungs and chest cavity) and atelectasis (collapsed lung caused by a blockage). He underwent a thoracentesis, left thoracotomy and chest tube placement, esophageal perforation repair, G and J tube placement, cervical esophagectomy, and proximal gastrectomy.

Bernard transferred to Kindred Hospital St. Louis South for rehabilitation. By the end of his 38-day stay, he was much stronger. After working with Kindred’s team of therapists, he could perform transfers and bed mobility with caregiver assistance and ambulate over 50 feet. He was able to perform oral care and personal hygiene tasks with minimal assistance. Bernard was discharged to an acute rehabilitation facility to continue building on the progress made at Kindred St. Louis South.

Rosalind was admitted to a short-term acute care hospital for a planned procedure. After the procedure, her heart rate and blood pressure dropped, and she suffered cardiac arrest. Rosalind was intubated and resuscitated, but she experienced respiratory failure.

Rosalind came to Kindred Hospital St. Louis South for ventilator weaning. Once she settled into the process, her respiratory strength increased, and her vent weaning picked up rapidly. After only 15 days at Kindred, she was off the vent permanently. Six days later, her tracheostomy tube was removed permanently, and she required no further supplemental oxygen.

In addition, while working with Kindred’s physical, occupational and speech therapy teams, Rosalind’s mobility improved. She advanced to needing only minimal to moderate assistance with bed mobility, standing and transferring. The OT team helped her gain the ability to perform oral care and personal hygiene with assistance, and she improved her safety awareness. She was also upgraded to a regular, thin diet.

After 31 days of progress at Kindred St. Louis South, Rosalind discharged to a skilled nursing facility to continue her health journey.

Edna went to a hospital with acute exacerbation of congestive heart failure with worsening shortness of breath, hypoxia, and significant weight gain after running out of her home oxygen supply.

To support her recovery, Edna needed a long-term acute care hospital to provide oxygen weaning, ABG monitoring, lab monitoring, telemetry for hypertension and heart failure, tube feeding, and physical, occupational, and speech therapy.

She was sent to Kindred Hospital St. Louis South, which provides specialized long-term acute care and rehabilitation for patients with complex medical conditions.

By working with Kindred’s physical and occupational therapy teams, Edna’s mobility improved. Soon, she was able to perform bed mobility with contact-guard assistance (a caregiver lightly touching her to provide support while she moved), walk more than 50 feet with a rolling walker with minimal assistance, perform toileting and hygiene with a caregiver standing close by to assist, and perform upper-body activities of daily living with setup assistance.

With hard work and the support of her care team, Edna was able to be discharged from Kindred St. Louis South, and she transferred to an
acute inpatient rehabilitation facility to continue her recovery.

Esther was taken to a hospital after having seizures. She went into acute respiratory failure, requiring intubation. She was diagnosed with autoimmune encephalitis – a condition in which the immune system attacks the brain. Esther was given a tracheostomy and a PEG tube. She was weaned off mechanical ventilation, but she needed long-term acute care for trach management and weaning, neurological monitoring, lab monitoring, nutrition optimization, and therapy.

For that next step, Esther transferred to Kindred Hospital St. Louis South, which provides specialized long-term acute care and rehabilitation for medically complex patients.

Esther did very well at Kindred and advanced rapidly in her healing journey. Six days after admission, she was breathing room air only, and her trach was capped. Just four days after that, her trach was removed, and she no longer required respiratory services.

Esther also received occupational and speech therapy for her cognition, alertness, and command following. With time, Esther’s cognition improved. She was awake and alert more often, allowing her to follow commands and participate in more therapy.

Physical and occupational therapists helped Esther improve her mobility. She became able with minimal assistance to perform bed mobility and transfers and walk more than 10 feet with a rolling walker. In addition, she could dress her upper body independently and perform personal/oral hygiene with only setup assistance. Esther was also able to return to a normal, oral diet.

Thanks to Esther’s hard work and the support of her Kindred caregivers, Esther was able to discharge and transfer to an acute inpatient rehabilitation facility to continue her recovery.
