Benedict was hospitalized with severe lower-back pain radiating into his leg. Imaging suggested a psoas abscess (infected pocket in a hip muscle) and spinal infection.

AT ADMISSION: Benedict had MSSA bacteremia (staph bacteria in the blood), spinal disc and bone infection, and a suspected deep hip muscle abscess. These infections caused back and leg pain and required prolonged intravenous antibiotics.

TREATMENT AT KINDRED: At Kindred Hospital St. Louis South, Benedict received IV antibiotics, wound and pain care, nutrition support, lab monitoring, and physical and occupational therapy. His wound care team and dietitian created plans to support and promote wound healing. He progressed to independent standing, walker-assisted mobility, stair climbing with help, and self-care with setup.

OUTCOME: After 77 days, Benedict was discharged home to continue recovering. His infection, wounds, strength, and independence improved through coordinated care.

After a month of worsening shortness of breath and coughing up blood, Sangabosamow was diagnosed with serious pulmonary conditions that required extensive treatment.

AT ADMISSION: Sangabosamow had necrotizing pneumonia (an infection that destroys lung tissue) and a pulmonary vein thrombus (blood clot in a lung vein). She received IV antibiotics, bronchoscopies, lung surgery, mechanical ventilation, and a tracheostomy.

TREATMENT AT KINDRED: At Kindred Hospital St. Louis South, respiratory therapy was a major focus, supported by the interdisciplinary care team. Despite a respiratory setback, Sangabosamow was liberated from the ventilator. Her oxygen needs were reduced, she began using a speaking valve, and her tracheostomy was removed.

OUTCOME: After 29 days of treatment, Sangabosamow regained independence and was discharged home with her son, using low-flow supplemental oxygen, endurance and independence. She discharged safely home to continue recovery.

Connieann sought care for a bowel blockage caused by a trapped abdominal hernia and a perforated viscus (hole in an internal organ). She had severe nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

AT ADMISSION: Connieann underwent hernia repair but developed persistent pain and lacked bowel function. Further surgery repaired her abdominal wall, removed dead tissue, and placed drains.

TREATMENT AT KINDRED: Connieann came to Kindred Hospital St. Louis South for care after her complicated hospitalization and multiple abdominal surgeries. She received specialized care for a reopened wound with tunneling (channels under the skin) and slough (dead tissue). The wound care team developed an individualized plan. Wound VAC therapy and nutrition promoted healing. Physical and occupational therapy restored strength and daily-living skills.

OUTCOME: After 43 days of treatment, Connieann transferred to a skilled nursing facility to continue healing, rebuild strength, and work toward independence.
