Aquatics and aquatic therapy are the use of water and its physical properties to get moving in a way that reduces joint stress, alleviates pain, and accelerates recovery. This can be seen as a safe way to transition to another form of therapy or working out if you are still in pain or suffer from reoccurring pain even after physical therapy. The buoyancy of the water allows you to feel lighter and allows you to get that movement without risking further damage. Many people are encouraged to keep working out after physical therapy to keep building those supporting muscles around the pained area so they can stay strong and get stronger to prevent and alleviate the pained area, and aquatics can be a great alternative to lifting weights. Locally, in St. Louis and surrounding areas there are many YMCA’s that have a pool within their facility. They do require a membership, but you get access to the pool, gym, track, and things like the basketball court, making it worth it for your recovery journey. Also, sometimes insurances can cover partial or all costs depending on your insurer. To learn more, please reach out to Specialized Physical Therapy today.

Pain can be a reoccurring thing if not treated appropriately. Many methods can alleviate that pain like icing, heating, pain relivers, and more, but at times these things can only relieve the pain temporarily. Without proper rehabilitation, resting, and strengthening, that may leave a pained individual to keep having the same reoccurring pain. That’s where physical therapy comes into play. Physical therapy can help alleviate the pain and can also prevent it from coming back using various techniques beyond icing and heating. These techniques can be accompanied by icing and heating but physical therapy also helps strengthen the surrounding muscles around the pain, incorporates stretching to relieve the pain, and uses other forms of exercise to make sure the pain doesn’t come back or to educate the patient on what to do if the pain were to come back. Lots of people confuse temporary pain relief with complete rehabilitation or they neglect physical therapy to get better, but if pain persists, please reach out to Specialized Physical Therapy, so we can help you find out the cause of the pain and help fix and reduce the pained area(s). Although people may think Physical Therapist and Chiropractors do the similar type of work with the body, they do vary in many ways and is needed for many different reasons.

Physical therapists primarily focus on improving movement, strength, flexibility, and overall function through exercises, stretching, and rehabilitation programs tailored to the patient’s condition. Their goal is to help patients recover from injuries, surgeries, or chronic pain while also preventing future issues from developing.

Flexibility and mobility are similar but different and in physical therapy we use both to restore function. This ensures stability with your mobility and increasing flexibility to a necessary length to avoid injury and dysfunction. The easiest way to tell the difference between the two is how your muscles react in each movement. Flexibility often involves moving a joint without forcing it or engaging your muscles to move it in a certain way. Mobility is when your muscles engage in deep movement like a squat or cat/cow exercise. Movement is a part of both, but your muscles engaging and putting yourself in certain positions are the difference between the two. Both flexibility and mobility are key for a high-quality life. Being able to be both flexible and mobile reduces stiffness, prevents injuries, and often increases blood flow and movement.

Sometimes during daily activities your spine can start to feel irritation or even pain from built up pressure or even certain movements causing pain. Luckily there are some things that can relieve or even fix the pain. These include stretches like the cat-cow, child’s pose, and knee to chest. These stretches help release excess pressure that might build up from continuously sitting or straining your back doing daily activities.
