Engine 42 Enters Retirement
As of July 21, 2026 our 1986 Mack CF Engine 42 has officially been retired from service. This engine served the Belltown Fire Department with distinction for the last 40 years, responding to thousands of emergency calls.
These Mack engines were known to be excellent pieces of fire apparatus, and Engine 42 was no exception. Equipped with a 750 gallon tank and 1250 gpm pump, 42 carried four firefighters(or more when the back step was in service). Decades of Belltown members have had the privilege of taking in their first call or responding to their first fire onboard Engine 42. Furthermore, all Belltown drivers trained over the past 20 plus years started their engine training with 42.
In recent years it became clear the engine was reaching the end of its life, and the department began a search for a replacement that would fill the role as backup to Engine 43. The Mack did not go out quietly, taking in two final calls last Tuesday while Engine 43 was committed on multiple storm related emergencies. A fitting last day of service for Engine 42!
