Camping continues! There are some really fun BOOM cards that help us SLPs plan engaging lessons with clients while working on speech sounds. Here we are working on the Z sound while seeing who can collect more marshmallows - me or the child!

And you can also do paper plans too - with another child I used PlayDough to make "marshmallows" (gray worked in a pinch!) and she squished them down on the s'mores, practicing each OR word multiple times as she did.

The ever popular song and book "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" in action! Each week this month, I hid my bear in a different spot around the clinic - on top of the bookshelf, behind the pirate ship, in the kitchen - and the kids used binoculars to find it and work on preposition work.🐻 👀

Camp theme continues - it's summer and there are bugs all around! 🐞 🐛 🐜 An iSpy Bug works really well with FINAL S blends, which we need to practice in addition to initial S blends! So with this one activity, you can hit initial S blends and final S (even Z!) blends too.

Now that I've taken a breath from the super non-fun businessy stuff that is happening - here is some camping fun we've been having this month! This is one of my favorite themes and the kids love it, too. We read books, play with the pretend fire and s'mores (and eat some of our own s'mores, too!), and "sleep" in the tent with sleeping bags. SO much language, following directions, and FUN!

Last week I shared that Highmark's reimbursement rates when down dramatically July 1 for SLPs. Jan 1, 2027 - more massive changes that are being driven by CMS and AMA - not GOOD changes at all.

And now I see this - PTs are getting a rate increase. Now I am not saying that PTs should NOT get this - of course they should!! But WE SHOULD TOO!

What are they doing with their advocacy work that we are not? Why can their national organization advocate like this and ours can't? Shouting from the rooftops and sending emails to our national organization are not helping. Grassroot groups are forming - and we will not be a force to mess with. If we accept this, we show that we accept this - and this is unacceptable!!

Another example of how I had a different activity planned (search and find F worksheet that they previously loved) but they wanted to go fishing 🎣 I can pivot and work on their F sound and go fishing - granted this was easier than some of the other requests made, but still! MAKE IT WORK TO GET THE WORK DONE!

I have some clients where I can plan and plan and plan some more and they come in and they have their own agenda. Work refusal for some of my clients is real - they have expectations placed on them *for hours* at camp or summer school and then I put another work expectation on them and some of them are like nope nope nope. So I have a choice - make them do what I planned and most likely get little work done, or change it up and incorporate my goals into their request. So, I choose the latter - I *know* that if I am going to target any of my goals, I need to pivot. Here an autistic client is working on the K sound to make their speech easier to understand. Construction vehicles were the choice of that day and I got out my cups so they could knock them down after running over their K words. (Hear how many K sounds I set up with this activity? Construction, cup, knock.) This was not planned whatsoever - but the child then did some work. And working on their speech is HARD - but necessary because they have SO much to say but they are SO hard to understand! You have to meet them where they are, and take breaks needed. Repetition repetition repetition through play is the way to go sometimes!

Many good, seasoned SLPs can incorporate games easily and successfully into their lessons! You want to play a shark game and I want to work on your R? I'm on it! I pivot within the lesson. PostIts for the win! When the shark ran over the word, the child had to say the R sound. This game has time pressure to it too, so the kid has to focus on their sound WHILE playing, which can be tricky for some kids!
