We did some Father's Day activities this past week in some lessons. We read books, colored, filled out "All About Dad" pages, and more! We answered questions, made choices, commented, and shared so much together. Some child-led, some SLP-led. But lots of connection and communication, for sure!

The R sound can be tricky! So I get out my little mouth models and some Playdough and we talk about where our tongue goes in our mouth - anchored on the sides on the top. This hands-on way to talk about R can be super helpful!

Y'all, sometimes kids make my brain hurt and I am tired of repeating myself 100 billion times 😆. So when a kid needs prompting to use their sound in a session during a higher level task like game play or conversation, sometimes I do something like this to make them laugh and PAY ATTENTION TO THEIR SPEECH - because I know they CAN say it, they just NEED TO DO IT ALL THE TIME without Ms. Emily repeating herself a billion jajillion times to say a good L.

I posted about having a picnic in clinic last week and wanted to expand a bit more to show what all goes into planning a lesson like this. We read a book with a favorite character - Mickey! - and I had the figures and food with me. We recreated the book and what each character ate with the play food. Always fun! Then I also had pictures of his family and various food printed on paper so he could pick what they wanted to eat. This activity had been done over a few sessions so it wasn't totally new each time I saw him.

These pictures are showing us working on varying verbs in a sentence - he could've said "like" or "eat" or "want" (or something else) when making his sentence. He is a pro at "I want ___" or "Mickey wants___" but we don't ALWAYS talk like that. Variation is good! I have my iPad out to model various verbs on my device and he can then find them on his device.

I also have to make sure I have everything appropriately sized with clear images to account for vision challenges and to write BIG when I script what he has said to me. His device is also propped up to how he can see and access it best. And when we are working, WAIT TIME is very important for this client. He has a lot to say, and sometimes we just have to WAIT to see what is said!

Lots of time and work goes into planning lessons, but to see good progres, it's worth it! We go above and beyond here! Pacing, patience, appropriate prompting, goals, and fun are always part of each lesson.

Yesterday was the last day of 🗣National Speech-Language-Hearing Month🌟 and I would be remiss if I did not do a shoutout to some of the best SLPs around! 💜They are passionate and thoughtful and love what they do! Thank you for your work and dedication each day!

To continue with 🗣National Speech-Language-Hearing Month ⭐️

Some things I have to do not because I like it, but because it's required - like picking "autism disorder" when doing Diagnosis and Treatment Plans. I hate that word - "disorder". That gives the connotation that all autistic people have to be fixed - because that's what you do with a disorder, you fix it. You bring it back to baseline.

Autistic people teach me a lot. They don't have to be "fixed."

The next time the DSM goes up for revision, I really do hope that it will say "autism" moving forward.
