The First Few Hours After an Unmedicated Home Birth — The Real Talk✨

No one talks enough about the hours after baby is in your arms.

Yes, it’s sacred.
Yes, it’s powerful.
But it’s also… raw.

Here’s what moms should know:

You might shake.
Full-body trembling from the hormone shift + adrenaline drop. Totally normal.

You’ll feel sore. 💪🏽
Your bottom is swollen. Your uterus is cramping. Your legs are jelly. You worked hard.

You still have to birth the placenta. 🛀
It’s usually easier than baby — but yes, there’s one more push.

The afterpains? 💊
Especially with second or third babies… they can take your breath away.
That cramping while baby nurses is your body protecting you.

There will be blood. 🩸
A heavy period amount at first is normal. Clots can happen. Birth is not tidy — it’s primal.

Breastfeeding might be magical. 🤱🏾
Or awkward.
Or sleepy.
Or messy.
All normal in the first hours.

And emotionally? 😩😂😅
You may cry.
Laugh.
Stare at your baby in disbelief.
Feel overwhelmed and deeply calm at the same time.

Here’s the truth:

The first hours after a home birth are not about looking put together.
They’re about staying in your nest.

Dim lights.
Warm blankets.
Skin to skin.
Soft voices.
Your own bed.
Your own shower.
Your own space.

Your body knows what it’s doing.
Your baby knows your smell.
Your uterus is working hard to protect you.

It may feel wild and vulnerable — but it is also holy.

You just did something powerful.

And even in the swelling, the cramping, the tears, the trembling…

You are safe.
You are capable.
You are held. ✨

Ha, this is what midwives think of when they hear about people being snowed in for a weekend. 🤣 I'd suggest reaching out to your midwife early, as it looks like October will potentially be a busy month! 😜
