Sauca can begin as a practice of body care, but means so much more. Purity is as much about your body’s systems as it is about your thoughts and behaviors.

Yama and niyama are interconnected. How we treat others is an expression of how we treat ourselves. Be purely you. Maintain a healthy body, express yourself honestly, take only what you need, share, be generous, be authentic.

Many asana are named because the shape we make with our bodies is similar to something else.

Vrksasana mimics the tree. Vrksa translates to English as tree. Asana translates as seat.

This is not a coincidence. The asana are attempts we make at connecting with nature through movement. We ground down while we lift our heads and “hoods” (made by our arms) as we attempt to shape ourselves like a cobra (bhujangasana). Balancing upon hands, we attempt to lift our legs behind and above us like a peacock exposing its feathers. As we reach an arm forward and a leg backward we expand like a tiger pausing mid-step while on the hunt.

Every asana is a shape with meaning. As you move through kramavinyasa do so with sankalpa. Direct your mind toward engaging in yama. Apply your practice beyond your body and you’ll experience yoga.

You might not realize that choosing to do a practice different from the one being guided could cause harm.

During scheduled, public, classes your guide is doing more than instructing movements. They are holding space, considering everyone’s needs, attempting to provide clear instructions and maintaining consistent energy. When you choose to access a different variation or more effortful asana you can disrupt the energy and distract others as well as the teacher who now needs to shift their focus and attention not only to you, but to anyone who sees you and wants to mimic you.

When joining publicly offered classes practice yama; respect your guide and others by listening, observing and considering how what you do could effect the practice for the group. Choose to help hold space and energy rather than disrupt it.

We all develop habits; ways of thinking, speaking and moving that are “easy.” At LTY, we refer to them as “karmic ruts.” They are things we do that keep us stuck and create karma because they are done without intention, awareness or consideration. Karmic ruts can cause harm.

When we speak without awareness our audience, act without consideration of the effects or hold onto thoughts without questioning their authenticity, we are creating himsa.

Consider if what you think is true for everyone, at all times, or just for you, in this moment.

Before you speak consider if what you are about to say is going to improve the conversation.

Act in ways that help others and make things better for yourself.

Practice ahimsa: non harming/helping/consideration and you’ll also begin to eliminate karma in your life.

Yoga philosophy discusses “collective consciousness.” This is the communication between all living things. This concept exists in many cultures and belief systems. There is an understanding that everything alive is intertwined.

Considering this, every thought, word and action we make affects every other living thing. Therefore, the only way to engage in ahimsa, fully, is to only think positively about all things.

Consider your thoughts. Do they tend to be positive or negative?

Of what quality are your words?

Whom do your actions serve? Why?

To practice ahimsa is to always bear in mind the concept of collective consciousness.

Sometimes we do sun salutations.
Sometimes we do balloon salutations.
Every time we do yoga asana that directs attention to our bodies while moving with intention.

Yoga asana prepares us for practicing yama. As we become more intentional with our bodies, the distractions of the physical are decreased making the mindfulness practices more accessible. Engaging in satya, asteya, aprarigraha, ahimsa and bramacarya while we attend to ourselves is the first step. Being truthful, sharing, generous, helpful and moderate when out in the world comes next.

Can you feel how awareness of your body and the ability to move it well improves your behaviors outward?

You might not be able to do no harm at all, but you can do less harm, and be more helpful.

There are moments throughout the day during which, if you’re a little more observant, considerate and intentional, you could effect a change that helps yourself and others.

Wash the pan after use it so it’s clean for the next use

Put that item away immediately so it’s easily found next time

Say “please” and “thank you”

Actually listen to every word someone’s story rather than looking on your phone or waiting for them to finish so you can speak

Return the shopping cart into the store

Drive slowly and use your signals

Stay focused on the task at hand until it’s complete

In what ways can you practice ahimsa throughout the day?

Introduce your children to the practices of yoga and they’ll naturally incorporate them into their lives.

It’s easy to teach the concepts of yama when pairing them with asana.

Satya: notice how your body feels and be truthful about what feels good or bad

Asteya: don’t worry about what others are doing, pay attention to your behaviors

Aparigraha: share what you learn with others so they can learn, too

Ahimsa: be careful as your move; do so slowly and with attention to accurate alignment

Yoga is everywhere. You can share it with everyone by practicing purposefully.

Ahimsa: non harming
Everything on Earth harms. The intention behind the harm matters. If the harm caused is intended to hurt, is done with malice, in spite, or as reciprocity, then it results in karma.

If the harm you cause through eating, moving, speaking, or thinking is with the intention of living authentically and as your best self, this is ahimsa. The best we can do is consider how what we’re thinking, saying and doing effects everyone and everything. There is no way to live without causing harm to other things. What we can do is be aware of and admit that we are so we can do so with as little impact as possible.

This doesn’t look like much trash.
We pick up this much or more each time we visit the beach. It’s not ours, but becomes so because we want our beaches to remain clean and our lake to stay clear.

Satya is the practice of admitting that we all, in some way, contribute to the trashing of the Earth.

Asteya is the act of sharing the spaces we love with everyone in responsible ways.

Aparigraha is consideration of how our presence anywhere impacts others, creatures, plants and the earth.

Ahimsa is putting in the effort to help reduce the impact we create.

Practice purposefully by taking the time to observe how you impact a place and to see the results of others having been there. Can you remove the evidence? Can you prevent further impact?
