We have some more exciting news at Lake Norman Doula. You remember Nicole? She spent most of last year with me as a mentee and now she’s a member of the team! I couldn’t be more grateful to have crossed paths and also SO excited for the clients that will get to have her as their doula!

Nicole says, “I believe that every birthing person deserves an empowering experience and I am committed to help make that a reality.”

You asked, and we answered! Lake Norman Doula is now offering a childbirth education class. The course takes place over two 4-hour sessions and is packed full of information about labor and birth prep, exercise and nutritional guidance, optimal fetal positioning, the stages of labor, how to communicate with providers, comfort measures, life with a newborn, and so much more!
If you’re already a client, the class is included in most doula packages. If you’d like to just take the course, it’s $250 per couple and includes a parent workbook as well.
Click one of the codes to sign up for a class and we will see you there!

Do you REALLY need to count kicks? Research shows that a noticeable change in your baby’s normal movement pattern can sometimes be an early sign of distress. Tracking kicks can help you recognize what’s normal for your baby so you can act quickly if something changes. Studies have found that maternal awareness of fetal movements can reduce the risk of stillbirth by prompting timely evaluation. Begin around 28 weeks or earlier if you have certain risk factors.
Kick Counting Myths:
* You need 10 kicks within 2 hours.
—Normal varies from baby to baby. Track the usual pattern of movements for YOUR baby. Count the Kicks app is very helpful (see below).
* Babies slow down because they’ve run out of room near the end of pregnancy.
—Type of movement may change (more jabs, fewer big kicks), the number of movements should remain consistent. Hiccups DON’T count.
* Baby movement slows during labor.
—You should feel your baby move throughout labor, too. Pay attention after your water breaks as well.
* A dramatic increase in movement is normal.
—Any dramatic changes in movement warrants a check-in with your provider.
* Eat/Drink something sugary, drink a cold glass of water, or lay down flat for a while to get baby moving.
—NO. NO. NO. Please go see your provider. This is outdated information. When in doubt, go be seen.
* If I have a fetal doppler, I’ll be fine.
—A change in baby’s movement can sometimes detect problems before changes in heart rate can.

I highly recommend the Count The Kicks app as you get to know what’s normal for your baby, you can share your kick sessions with your provider, it has a contraction timer, and more!

Proud to have Spinning Babies knowledge! How many of my clients out there know I PREACH the balancing during pregnancy? 😆 and if needed during labor, we’ll do the things!

We’re excited to share the findings of a new report published in the European Journal of Midwifery on the Spinning Babies® approach and its role in promoting fetal head rotation during labor.

Key Findings:
✅ Women whose babies began labor in occiput-posterior or occiput-transverse positions, 93.3% of those who used Spinning Babies® techniques experienced rotation to the anterior position by delivery.

💡In contrast, only 63.6% of women in the control group (who did not use Spinning Babies®) saw that rotation.

✅ Use of Spinning Babies® was associated with a 45% increased likelihood of achieving anterior positioning (RR = 1.45; 95% CI: 1.23–1.72), after adjustment for parity and analgesia.

What does this mean?
While the study is retrospective and further research is needed, these results suggest that Spinning Babies® techniques may help support more optimal fetal positioning during labor, potentially making the birthing process smoother for many women. 🫶

We’re thrilled to see clinicians and researchers beginning to examine what many of us in the birth-work community have long observed. ❤️
