🇺🇸🤍 July 4th Reflections: Independence, Freedom, and the Rights of Women

As we step into July 4th—Independence Day—we celebrate the idea of freedom, autonomy, and self-determination.

For many women, especially those navigating pregnancy, birth, and postpartum life, this day can also hold deeper reflection.

Because freedom isn’t only something written in history—it is something lived in the body.

🤍 For birthing people, freedom means:
• The right to informed, respectful care
• The right to make decisions about your own body
• The right to ask questions and be heard without dismissal
• The right to safe, evidence-based maternal care regardless of income or background
• The right to dignity during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum

In the current social climate, conversations around maternal health, autonomy, and access to care continue to evolve. And while opinions may differ, one truth remains steady:

✨ Every woman deserves to feel safe, supported, and in control of her own healthcare decisions.

As midwives, we are reminded that birth is not just a clinical event—it is a human right experience. One that should be grounded in respect, compassion, and choice.

So this Independence Day, alongside the celebrations, fireworks, and traditions… we also honor the ongoing journey toward true bodily autonomy and equitable care for all women.

🤍 Freedom should be felt in the body—not just spoken in words.

Pregnancy brain is so real… 🤍

I walked into the kitchen yesterday and completely forgot why I went in there.
So I just stood there for a second… then decided to eat something.

Because honestly, at that point, it’s not confusion anymore—it’s strategy. 😅

If you know, you know.

Pregnancy has a way of slowing everything down… including your memory… but making sure you’re still well-fed in the process.

Happy International Joke day!!!!

🌊 Flow Instead of Force

Not every part of pregnancy can be planned or controlled.
Some moments ask us to loosen our grip and respond instead of resist.

This week, focus less on doing everything perfectly and more on staying connected to yourself.

✨ Practice:
The next time something shifts unexpectedly, pause before reacting. Take one full breath first.

🌿 Normal Summer Heat Swelling (Physiologic Edema)
This is very common in pregnancy, especially in the third trimester.

You may notice:
• Swelling in feet, ankles, and hands
• Worse at the end of the day or after standing
• Improves with rest, elevation, hydration, or cooling down
• Comes and goes depending on heat and activity
• No other concerning symptoms

💧 This type of swelling is often related to heat, circulation changes, and fluid retention in pregnancy.

⚠️ Possible Pre-Eclampsia Warning Signs (Needs Evaluation)
Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy condition involving high blood pressure and organ stress. Swelling alone does NOT diagnose it—but it can be a clue when paired with other symptoms.

Watch for:
• Sudden or severe swelling (especially face or around eyes)
• Swelling that doesn’t improve with rest
• Persistent headache that won’t go away
• Vision changes (spots, blurry vision, flashing lights)
• Right upper belly pain or rib pain
• Nausea/vomiting that feels unusual in later pregnancy
• Elevated blood pressure readings

🚨 If these symptoms appear, it’s important to contact your provider right away.

🤍 Key takeaway:
Heat swelling tends to be mild, gradual, and responsive to rest.
Pre-eclampsia involves swelling plus other symptoms and needs prompt evaluation.

💧 Stay cool, stay hydrated, elevate when you can—and always trust your instincts about your body.
